Numerous free events sponsored by the Student Programming Board (SPB) will take place in front of the Student Union. Jim Mosier, co-director of entertainment at the SPB, describes the events that opened the week as successful. “Yesterday we had a me- chanical bull,” Mosier said Tuesday. “I think that the stu- dents liked it.

With over 3,000 volunteers and close to 300 projects this year, the Big Event was more successful than ever. Even though it takes place on only one day, the planning process continues year-round. Preparation begins in the spring with the selection of the directors. Following that begins the application process for staff members.

Liz Barrett, the owner of EatingOxford.com, said she was selected as Mississippi’s influencers to encourage people to participate.
“I was approached by a Guinness account coordinator because of the popularity of EatingOxford.com in Mississippi,” she said. “They were seeking someone who could get the word out to the most people.”

Tonight, 89 female contestants will compete for the title of “Most Beautiful.” 

The winner will receive not only a crown, but also the recognition and pride that comes with the title. 

The pageant itself comes not only with many beautiful women all vying for a chance to become the “Most Beautiful” woman on the University of Mississippi campus, but also with a rich history of legendary excellence.

The Goo Goo Dolls will have “something for the rest of us” in Oxford on Sunday.

On April 3, the Grammy-nominated alternative rock band will be kicking off its new tour at the University of Mississippi in support of its 2010 album, “Something for the Rest of Us.”

The rock concert will be held in the Grove at 5 p.m. with an opening act by Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors.

Students interested in taking a shot at becoming the next star on campus may have an opportunity in the near future.

The Student Programming Board, the Department of Campus Programming and Papa John’s Pizza will host the seventh-annual Ole Miss Idol talent competition starting Wednesday.

The competition will be held at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Food Court. The public is invited to attend all four rounds at no charge, and Papa John’s Pizza will provide free pizza each night.

As Oxford Film Festival approaches, Oxford prepares for the annual weekend of Hollywood-style glitz and glamour.

The festival, which takes place Feb. 10-13, will have its opening ceremonies at The Lyric Theater. The event kicks off with Thacker Mountain Radio, followed by two short films and “Brother’s Justice,” a feature narrative directed by David Palmer and Dax Shepard.
