Shannon Richardson, assistant director of campus recreation and co-chair of the Smoke-Free Policy Implementation Committee, said a resolution was passed last year for a smoke-free campus by the Associated Student Body.

The Ole Miss-Tulane game Saturday will not be the only chance the Pride of the South and spirit squads get to perform in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans this weekend. They are taking the field again Sunday to perform the halftime show of the New Orleans Saints-Kansas City Chiefs game.

The Ole Miss-Tulane game Saturday will not be the only chance the Pride of the South and spirit squads get to perform in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans this weekend. They are taking the field again Sunday to perform the halftime show of the New Orleans Saints-Kansas City Chiefs game. Assistant Director of Bands Randy Dale said the band, which was invited to perform at the game in May, will perform the same halftime show it did for the Texas game this past Saturday.

The Office of Sustainability is getting ready to kick off its new recycling campaign for the upcoming football season. Students that volunteer to help promote the Green Grove program will be rewarded with prime seating. According to Assistant Director of Office Sustainability Anne McCauley, the Grove and Circle produced 435 tons of garbage last year. McCauley said that only four tons of that garbage was recycled, a number that she and the Sustainability Office wish to improve

The small, pleasant town of Oxford will be a relaxing, lazy place in midsummer. Most students will be enjoying their laid-back schedule, tak- ing a few classes and maybe squeezing in some pool time. But on June 29, one group of students will set out from Oxford, leaving school and boredom behind, for a weekend of adventure.

But on June 29, one group of students will set out from Oxford, leaving school and boredom behind, for a weekend of adventure.

These students will be among the lucky 10 who will be part of the Ole Miss Outdoors white water rafting trip on the Ocoee River. Perfectly placed in mid-summer, the trip will take place from June 29 to July 1.

Preparation begins in the spring with the selection of the directors. Following that begins the application process for staff members.

The University of Mississippi welcomed 50 leading specialists in the botanic and food industries from all over the world to participate in the 11th Annual Oxford International Conference on the Science of Botanicals April 16-19. 

The science specialists discussed a range of topics about the quality and safety of dietary supplements, including the importance of folk medicine to modern science.

When most people think of the opera, words like jazz, Marxism, risqué or social themes dealing with corporate greed, poverty or the subjugation of women don’t come to mind. Another two words that don’t appear to be synonymous are opera and Mississippi.

However, upon seeing “The Threepenny Opera” at Meek Auditiorium, conventional ideas about opera should be reevaluated.

While it may seem that alcohol abuse is out of control these days, Erin Murphy-Cromeans, the assistant director of health promotion on campus, said there has not appeared to be an increase in high-risk drinking over the years.

The freshman retention rate at the University of Mississippi has risen more than 8 percent since 1983, according to data from the Institutional Review Board.

 

The freshman retention rate at the University of Mississippi has risen more than 8 percent since 1983, according to data from the Institutional Review Board.

The number of students graduating from the university in four years has increased from 33 percent to 36.5 percent.

More than 81 percent of the freshman class of 2010 is still at the university, and less than 7 percent of this year’s freshman class chose not to return for a second semester. For the freshman class of 2004, this number was 9 percent.

In an effort to improve the overall quality of the program, Rebel Pedals is in the process of switching from day-by-day use to a longer rental goal.

While Oxford may be known for the thousands of students the University of Mississippi attracts, the steps required to achieve higher learning are not overlooked.
Oxford School District’s 2011 enrollment summary noted that the area is host to 3,733 students, ranging from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. Despite growing enrollment, however, Interim Superintendent Brian Harvey said the schools do not offer a tutoring service but allow after-school tutoring opportunities on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

AlcoholEdu, an online program intended to inform students about the use of alcohol, is entering its fifth year of existence, and students are beginning to wonder if there is any good coming from it.

Although the two-hour online program is viewed by the university as an educational tool, many students, including senior hospitality major Kailey Kemp, raise questions as to the program’s actual effectiveness.
