Just before their season opener Friday, Ole Miss announced they self-imposed a one-year postseason ban on the women’s basketball program, but the Lady Rebels (1-0) put that behind them on their way to a 95-85 win over Southeastern Louisiana.

Junior guard Diara Moore, a junior college transfer, led the charge for the Rebels in her debut. She scored 25 points and added seven rebounds in 32 minutes of play.

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia used a 16-2 run in the second half to pull away from the Ole Miss women’s basketball team as the Lady Bulldogs beat the Rebels 87-52 Thursday night in Athens.

With the loss Ole Miss fell to 12-16 (2-13 SEC) while No. 16 Georgia improved to 21-7 (10-5 SEC). The Rebels didn’t trail by more than five until the Lady Bulldogs used its 16-2 run to put the game out of reach.

It was going to be an uphill battle for the Ole Miss women’s basketball team (12-15, 2-12 SEC) as they welcomed the No. 10 Tennessee Lady Volunteers (20-7, 11-3 SEC) for Senior Day. The Lady Rebels fought hard and tried to send their three seniors out with a win in their last home game, but the Lady Vols prove too much in a 66-56 win Sunday afternoon.

In desperate need of a win, the Ole Miss Women’s basketball team hoped to find one against struggling Alabama, but the Lady Crimson Tide (11-14; 1-10 SEC) ended up defeating the Lady Rebels (12-13; 2-10 SEC) 52-47.

“I was very disappointed in how we started the game,” Head Coach Renee Ladner said. “I commend Alabama. They played good basketball.”
It was a tale of two halves for Ole Miss. The Rebels looked sluggish at the beginning, having trouble getting going.

Coming off two tough road losses at No. 7 Kentucky and Florida this past week, the Ole Miss women’s basketball team (12-12, 2-8 SEC) returns home and hosts Alabama (10-14, 0-10 SEC) tonight. 

Coming off two tough road losses at No. 7 Kentucky and Florida this past week, the Ole Miss women’s basketball team (12-12, 2-8 SEC) returns home and hosts Alabama (10-14, 0-10 SEC) tonight.

In their first meeting this season, the Lady Rebels won 69-55 in Tuscaloosa. Ole Miss had their best offensive performance of the season, shooting a season-best 66.7 percent from the field. The Lady Rebels have lost the six games since and look to snap that losing streak and get back to their winning ways.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Ole Miss women’s basketball team fell at Florida Sunday afternoon, 84-55.

With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 12-12 (2-9 SEC) while Florida improved to 15-8 (5-5 SEC).

Valencia McFarland led Ole Miss with 11 points, six boards and four assists.  Tia Faleru finished with 10 points and seven rebounds and Danielle McCray added eight points and five rebounds.  Monique Jackson recorded a career-best seven points.

With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 12-9 overall (2-6 SEC) while South Carolina who is receiving votes in both national polls this week, improved to 16-5 overall (5-3 SEC).

Valencia McFarland and Tia Faleru each ended the game with 12 points.  Faleru added a team-high nine rebounds.

The Ole Miss Lady Rebels (5-1) stretched their winning streak to four games with an 83-52 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-5) Tuesday. It was the Lady Rebels’ first home game since returning from the holiday road trip this past week, which included wins over Southeast Missouri State and Massachusetts.

AMHERST, Mass. – Nikki Byrd led four players in double figures as the Ole Miss women’s basketball team won its third straight game, 72-67, at UMass Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Ole Miss improved to 4-1 overall, while fell to UMass 1-4.

The win gave Ole Miss its third 4-1 start over the last three seasons.

It also pushed the Rebels’ winning streak to three games, the longest since the 2009-10 season when Ole Miss won five straight from January 6 – January 24.

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Ole Miss women’s basketball team fell at Lamar Tuesday night, 67-58.

With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 1-1 while Lamar improved to 2-1.

“They are a very good basketball team. I think the difference was for the first eight minutes we stuck to our game plan and guarded them as we should have,” head coach Renee Ladner said.  “They went on a run and they had two threes that put us back on our heels and we never recovered from it.”

The 2011-12 basketball season tips off today for the Ole Miss women’s team as they host North Florida. The team returns four starters from last season, but is also going to have a very young look to it.

 

The 2011-12 basketball season tips off today for the Ole Miss women’s team as they host North Florida. The team returns four starters from last season, but is also going to have a very young look to it.

The team has a lot of younger players, 10 underclassmen to five upperclassmen.

“You just got to find a way to help them mesh and grow and get a little bit better each day,” head coach Renee Ladner said. “We’ll be imperfect, but that is why you play a non-conference schedule.”

As she enters her sophomore season, Valencia McFarland brings international experience to the Ole Miss women’s basketball team. McFarland, a point guard from Edwards, just returned from playing with the USA Basketball Pan American team. She was the first player in Ole Miss history to be selected for the Pan American team.
“I had a chance to play with a lot of great players from different schools,” McFarland said of her time with the USA team. “I was able to learn a lot from them and the coaches.”

Andy Kennedy’s Ole Miss men’s basketball team was picked to finish 7th in the Southeastern Conference in a voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members, the SEC announced Monday. 

The Kentucky men’s basketball team was picked to win the SEC this year, earning 18 of the 23 first-place votes. Vanderbilt, who was picked second, earned four first-place votes, followed by Florida, who also earned a first-place vote.

Guadalajara, Mexico –  Ole Miss women’s basketball sophomore point guard Valencia McFarland and Team USA won its final two games at the Pan Am Games, beating host Mexico and Jamaica.

Team USA ended its run in the Pan Am Games with a 2-2 record.

On Sunday night, Team USA beat host and previously unbeaten Mexico, 87-58, before beating Jamaica, 87-41, Monday morning in the seventh/eighth place game.

The 2011-12 women’s basketball season is officially underway as official practice for the team has started.

Teams can start practice 40 days before their first game and are only allowed 30 practices in those 40 days.

“We are anxiously awaiting the opening of the new season.  We’ve got a bunch of young players that are talented to go with our upperclassmen that really like to play hard and play fast,” head coach Renee Ladner said.

Ole Miss women’s basketball sophomore point guard Valencia McFarland has been selected as one of 12 players to the USA Basketball Pan American roster, USA Basketball announced today.

McFarland is the first player in Ole Miss history to be selected to the Pan American games roster.  The player selections were made by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Committee and the official 12-member USA roster includes one high school player and 11 collegiate athletes.

It’s been a tough year for the Ole Miss women’s basketball team (10-18, 3-13 SEC), who lost seven straight games to end the regular season.

It’s been a tough year for the Ole Miss women’s basketball team (10-18, 3-13 SEC), who lost seven straight games to end the regular season.

With most of the team comprised of freshmen, it is understandable that Ole Miss experienced some growing pains. In addition to youth, the team lost one of its biggest contributors, senior guard Kayla Melson, who suffered an injury in the Florida game, which was the last contest the Lady Rebels won.

After leading the majority of the game, the Ole Miss women’s basketball team saw No. 24/RV Georgia take the lead with 9:55 left to play as the Bulldogs defeated the Rebels 61-56 Sunday afternoon.

After leading the majority of the game, the Ole Miss women’s basketball team saw No. 24/RV Georgia take the lead with 9:55 left to play as the Bulldogs defeated the Rebels 61-56 Sunday afternoon.

Ole Miss led from the 8:00 minute mark in the first half until Georgia went ahead with 9:55 left in the game.  The Rebels cut the Bulldogs’ lead to two, 47-45, with 7:47 to play but couldn’t retake the lead.

With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 10-14 overall (3-9 SEC) while No. 24/RV Georgia improved to 19-6 overall (9-3 SEC).
