Content about Thanksgiving

November 26, 2012

Well, it’s business as usual with a case of the Mondays. The semester’s end has come and we’ve only a bit further to go.
Whether or not you’ve utilized your Thanksgiving time wisely flows as water under a bridge. Now, the proving grounds are here and despite our eventful fall let us finish strong. Over the next two weeks letter grades can be made and lost by your choices.

We move into the halfway point of this fall’s theatrical performance of the 2012-13 school year. Fifty years of integration and a new football coach, record enrollment and an election year: This show has quite a bit going on. So if the whole world is a stage then why is intermission (fall break) not until three weeks before the show’s over until spring?

There’s a good reason a lot of romantic comedies somehow involve Valentine’s Day. Whether people describe their situation as single, engaged, in a relationship or “it’s complicated,” the way most people treat the holiday is a little entertaining.

Imagine your typical Thanksgiving. There is a perfectly cooked turkey, friends and family all around, succulent honey ham, mouth-watering stuffing and the best pecan pie you’ve ever tasted. Shouldn’t everybody have an opportunity to enjoy that? Unfortunately, not everyone gets the chance to enjoy what most of us enjoy yearly.
The Lambda Sigma chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority saw fit to spend its break in Oxford to help those who would have gone without the Thanksgiving experience this year.

Do you think everyone will be taking classes online?

As we return from our Thanksgiving break and begin traditional classes again, along with elementary and high schools all over the country, a feeling of normalcy settles us back into the routine.

We’re used to and comfortable with the education mandated by our forefathers. But “normal” classrooms are being challenged by a new world in learning, a new tactic to reach some students who supposedly don’t adapt to the everyday way – something called the virtual classroom.

Black Friday sales increased 7 percent this year compared to 2010, according to ShopperTrak research.
This is a good sign for retailers heading into the holiday buying season. The question is whether this increase will translate into higher profits for Oxford’s businesses.
University of Mississippi student Amanda Knight, an Oxford local, said she usually does her shopping in Oxford.

Dear Eliza,
I love my family– I really do. However, when we get together for the holidays, let’s just say I’d rather be back at school, going to class instead of sitting around the table discussing politics, the economy, or the Egg Bowl.

Now that Christmas break is just two weeks away, I’m afraid I might go insane from too much family time. I thought I could handle just a week off for Thanksgiving, but I was wrong, and Christmas break is six weeks, much longer than Thanksgiving.

What should I do? I’m desperate!

1 - Time Travel: Kanye West’s new album, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” arrives in stores Nov. 22. You may be asking, “Why are you doing a Top Ten on it a week before it’s released?” Well, the answer is pretty obvious: You all need to be prepared for its upcoming mind blowing-ness (really though, Thanksgiving break is next week). To get ready, might I suggest tampering with the space-time continuum? C’mon, you need a few extra days or so, anyway. We all know how your grades have been falling harder than Democrat seats in the Senate.

Dear Eliza,

I have this group of friends here, and we all met freshman year. Lately, it has come to our attention that one of our friends is irritable to be around. She is sometimes rude, snaps for no apparent reason and blames us for these ludicrous things that happen to her.

We are so frustrated and tired of all her ridiculous ways that we don’t know what we should do: leave her alone, or confront her even though that might lead to another fight. What should we do? We really don’t want to lose her though.

While opinions vary from person to person, there are some instances where the general consensus is so strong that to go against it is to go against universal acclaim. The universe is much bigger than you are, so while you’re entitled to your opinion of the Grove and its festivities, you’re going to have trouble convincing anyone that has experienced it that the hype isn’t warranted.
