John Hawkins, Ole Miss’ first black cheerleader, came under fire when he refused to wave the confederate flag after he made the team in 1982. Clara Bibbs, Hawkins’ friend and also an African-American, auditioned but did not make the team.

When Sidna Brower Mitchell returned to campus from a football game in Jackson on the night of Sept. 30, 1962, she witnessed an event that would not only change the university, but her life as well.

When Sidna Brower Mitchell returned to campus from a football game in Jackson on the night of Sept. 30, 1962, she witnessed an event that would not only change the university, but her life as well. Federal marshals surrounded the Lyceum, and rocks and coke bottles were being thrown from the crowd. “How can this be happening?” Mitchell thought to herself. She remembers a bottle crashing on the curb where she was standing. “I jumped back just to get out of the way.” That night, Mitchell attended a meeting in the old student union building with campus leaders.
