Despite my love of Sylvester Stallone, 80s action flicks and explosions, I was pretty underwhelmed by the first “Expendables.” The movie that promised to have all my favorite action stars fighting side by side was actually pretty dull and uninspired, and most of the stars were relegated to cameos.
“The Expendables 2” is everything the first movie wanted to be and more.

First and foremost, my heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the victims of the theater shooting in Colorado.
Now, some backstory: the first movie I ever wrote a review for was “The Dark Knight,” back in 2008. Positive response to that review lead to me writing more and two years I'm still here, writing reviews for The Daily Mississippian and for your enjoyment (?). So you have Christopher Nolan to blame for having to read my dreck on a semi-weekly basis.

A lot of people, myself included, scoffed at the idea of rebooting the Spider-Man franchise so quickly. After all, it's only been five years since "Spider-Man 3," and even though that movie was 50 shades of awful, it still made a boatload of money and all signs pointed toward a fourth film. For whatever reason, that never happened and now we've got "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Graduation is right around the corner; you’re probably ready to get rid of the car that you’ve had since high school.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure your ’93 Camry has done you well, but it is nice to have a car with a working air conditioner, a headliner that doesn’t sag, doesn’t need two quarts of oil at every fill-up and doesn’t have that bottle of grape juice that’s been in the trunk since 2006 and has now fermented into wine.

Today, a movie called “Bully” is making headlines. Not for the amount of money it made at the box office or the eye-popping visual effects, but for the rating it received. The movie, a documentary, follows the lives of teenagers who both bully and are bullied and is intended to educate the audience about the realities of teenage social life today. However, the MPAA slapped the documentary with an R rating, thus prohibiting it from being played in schools and anyone under the age of 17 from seeing it without a parent. This is just the latest in the long line of scandals with the bureaucracy and dubious rating standards of the MPAA.

Heckel helps support Rafiki, an orphanage located near the coastal city of Winneba, Ghana, about 40 miles west of the capital city of Accra.

Rafiki, which means “friend” in native Swahili, serves to provide better living conditions, education and a stable environment for children in Ghana.

What can I say about George Lucas that hasn’t already been screamed at movie screens by angry nerds for the past 15 years?  He’s responsible for some of the most thrilling and spectacular cinematic moments that you remember from your childhood. However, I doubt there’s ever been a person born more completely unable to leave well enough alone than George Lucas.

When I was in seventh grade, I was the beast when our drama class put on a production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

But not the beast you would think of. Our mascot was the blue devil, making this beast the blue devil head with a nice jacket. I was a blue beast. Oddly appropriate, I think. I did a pretty good job, despite having to hold a microphone under my mask so the audience could hear me.

It’s been three years since we last heard from Harold and Kumar, and I don’t think there’s been any major outcry for another sequel, but here they are with “A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas,” anyway.

Set six years after their last adventure, “HK3” picks up with our affable stoner heroes, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn), who are leading separate lives and haven’t spoken to each other in a few years.

Growing up, Halloween was probably my favorite holiday of the year, second only to Christmas.

I was a really imaginative kid, so the idea of getting to dress up and parade around all day as something else — and get rewarded for it in candy — easily earned Oct. 31 a spot on my “favorite days of the year” list.

Well folks, it’s Halloween, and since I’m sure you’ll all be spending this most glorious of holidays sitting at home watching TV, I thought I’d do you a solid and recommend some horror flicks.

These aren’t necessarily the best or even the scariest, just ones that never fail to get me in the Halloween spirit.

Confession: I’ve never seen the original “Footloose,” so I walked into the remake with a clean slate.

I was even prepared to like it just fine because occasionally I enjoy feel-good movies where singing and dancing solve all the world’s problems.

If “Footloose” had just stuck with that idea, it might have been a good movie, or at least a passable one.

There hasn’t been a good X-Men movie since 2002 when I was a junior in high school, so I didn’t exactly have high hopes for the newest installment, “X-Men: First Class,” which was released June 3.

Everyone remembers the success of “The Sixth Sense” and the big twist at the end of M. Night Shyamalan’s blockbuster hit that launched him into the highest echelon of movie making. However, those who have fallen from great heights usually fall the hardest, and M. Night Shyamalan is no exception.
