The University of Mississippi is investigating a racial crime on campus. The University Police Department (UPD) said someone on Nov. 5 allegedly vandalized the truck of freshman Jamal Woods, a black liberal arts major and ROTC member at Ole Miss.

The University of Mississippi is investigating a racial crime on campus. The University Police Department (UPD) said someone on Nov. 5 allegedly vandalized the truck of freshman Jamal Woods, a black liberal arts major and ROTC member at Ole Miss.

The vandalism of the truck occurred after Woods moved from the Stockard residence hall to the Deaton residence hall because of a racial incident that occurred in Stockard.

Big Brother is watching you. People have always been paranoid about the power of government. But with the recent rejection of the Udall Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, the idea of Big Brother taking you in the middle of the night has become more real.

The crime rate in Oxford has been considerably lower in the last six years compared to those of other cities in Mississippi.

 

The crime rate in Oxford has been considerably lower in the past six years compared to those of other cities in Mississippi. With the relatively small population of 18,000, Oxford has proven itself to be a reasonably safe place to live in Mississippi.

“The No. 1 crime in Oxford now is property theft from residences and autos,” Oxford Police Chief Mike Martin said. “There are really no ‘bad’ areas in Oxford.”

While there are plenty of places in Mississippi that have problems with crime, Oxford is not one of them.

With just 18,000 residents in the city, under 5 percent of the community has been involved with or affected by crime. The state average for Mississippians as a whole involved with or affected by crime is 30 percent.

Property crime was the category with the most offenses, with 385 cases reported in 2009. The lowest category was murder, non-negligent manslaughter and arson, for which no cases were reported.
