Mississippi has the highest teen pregnancy rate once again, according to state data released on Tuesday. For 2010, Mississippi reported 55 births for every 1,000 teen girls aged 15-19. That number is 60 percent higher than the average birth rate for the whole country.

Recently, a fervent and impassioned debate hit both houses of Congress. It has caused hours of contentious discussions and set the political blogopshere on fire. However, this debate isn’t about the national debt, the unemployment rate, Syria or even our continued military presence in Afghanistan. Nope, this debate is about whether or not insurance is required to cover contraception.

This past week, Obama announced that he has revised a rule concerning birth control and sterilization for employees of faith-based organizations. This revision basically says that if an employer is against providing birth control due to religious beliefs, then the employee seeking birth control can deal directly with the insurance company who must provide the birth control free of cost.

As voting day for Amendment 26 approaches, opposition groups are starting to speak out.
While many pro-life organizations have bigger wallets and more members, opposing groups are gearing up to educate the public on the details of the amendment with whatever resources they have.
Tonight, several members of the Lafayette County Women for Progress (LCWP) are organizing a fundraiser at Two Stick against Amendment 26, which will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot. The group will raise money for nonprofits across the state opposed to the amendment.

Mississippi has the highest teen pregnancy rate and ranks No. 1 in chlamydia and gonorrhea infections, according to statistics taken from the Mississippi State Department of Health.  The age group of 15-24 makes up 76 percent of all chlamydia cases and 70 percent of all gonorrhea cases in the state. The 15- to 24-year-old demographic is only 15 percent of Mississippi’s population.
