“I think lightning in a bottle has hit three times,” Associate Athletics Director Lynnette said when she and recently hired Athletics Director Ross Bjork introduced Adrian Wiggins as the next head coach of the Ole Miss women’s basketball team.

That’s how search committee co-chair and FedEx executive Mike Glenn described the hires of football coach Hugh Freeze and the recently introduced Athletics Director Ross Bjork, who previously served in the same capacity at Western Kentucky. The committee, which included Glenn, co-chair Archie Manning and Chancellor Dan Jones, agreed Bjork’s vision, qualifications, integrity and character set him apart from “a strong pool of candidates for the position.” In his introduction, Jones stressed the importance of athletics for Ole Miss, as well as excellence in the overall university.

The Bennie Abram trial is still under way, as the University of Mississippi tries to get the case dismissed. Judge Andrew Howorth will rule on the motion to dismiss soon and is waiting on the plaintiffs to amend their complaints.

Abram, a former Ole Miss football player, died Feb. 19, 2010 from complications involving sickle cell trait following a football practice.

Renee Ladner announced Friday that she is stepping down as head coach of the Ole Miss women’s basketball team.

 

Renee Ladner announced Friday that she is stepping down as head coach of the Ole Miss women’s basketball team.

“When I was named the head coach five years ago, it was a dream come true,” Ladner said. “And to have the privilege of coaching such incredible young ladies over the last several years is simply priceless. I love Ole Miss and will support this program any way I can moving forward.”

Chancellor Dan Jones formally launched the search for a new Director of Athletics today, announcing the members of the search committee, scheduling the first committee meeting, and setting expectations for the search.

As with the head football coach search, the co-chairs for the search committee are Ole Miss football legend Archie Manning and FedEx executive Mike Glenn. Other members of the search committee include the current President of the Ole Miss Alumni Association, Richard Noble, two faculty members Ron Rychlak and Ethel Young-Minor, and UMAA Foundation governing board member, Cal Mayo. Noble, Rychlak, and Young-Minor also served on the search committee that recommended hiring Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze.

One day after Athletics Director Pete Boone and Chancellor Dan Jones announced Houston Nutt’s tenure as Ole Miss head coach would end after this season’s Egg Bowl, some of the assistant coaches shared their thoughts on the turn of events.

“I was surprised and disappointed because I know the amount of time and effort that has been put into it, but, if you’ve been in the game long enough, you know these things happen,” Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix said after practice Tuesday.

Just after University of Mississippi classes started Thursday morning, students and alumni were greeted with a message from Chancellor Dan Jones.

It was not a message hoping the students were having a great year thus far, nor was it congratulatory on the freshman class for breaking an ACT record; rather, it was addressing the group Forward Rebels.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Led by senior Lee Ellis Moore’s win in the 400 meter hurdles, Ole Miss posted several impressive results over the weekend at the prestigious Drake Relays.

Moore captured the 400 meter hurdle crown with a time of 49.96, just shy of his season-best 49.82 that ranks him fifth in the nation in the event. He won the event at the Drake Relays for the second straight year and won for the second straight week. He has finished in the top three in the 400-meter hurdles at each of the last five meets.
