Oxford humane society hosts events to save shelter

BY SHEENA BAKER | Staff Reporter

The Oxford Humane Society hosted the 6th annual Barktoberfest at the Library Sports Bar last night and plans to have other events supporting the organization later this year.

Barktoberfest is a fundraiser in which the Humane Society raises money to
keep the humane society in business.

Hattie Alton, development director of the Oxford Humane Society, said she
hoped the event would be a success.

“All proceeds go to the daily operations of the shelter,” Alton said. “We do
events like this to keep the doors of the shelter open.”

The event was a beer tasting where people sampled 20 of their favorite beers
for free.

Alton said there were beers from several countries being served.

“We have beer from the U.S., Mexico, Jamaica and Germany,” Alton said. There was also free pizza and door prizes at the event.

Some of the prizes included coolers with chairs and refrigerators, Alton said.

Some businesses that donated prizes were Village Taylor, Miss Behavin’, Elite
Furnishings and University Sporting Goods.

The Oxford Humane Society also hosts other fundraisers throughout the
year.

They have Strut For Mutt in November, Paws for Art in January and Stars
and Stripes on the Fourth of July.

Alton said Paws for Arts is their most successful fundraiser.

“We have a silent auction during Paws for Art,” Alton said. “We tend to
raise the most money during that event.”

Yappy Hour is also a project the society does the last Tuesday of every
month.

It supports the construction of the new animal shelter.

It is an event where adults and kids can bring their dogs in and mingle
together, Alton said.

“The dogs have to be friendly,” Alton said. “It’s just fun for people to get out
with their dogs. It’s a real treat.”

Barktoberfest will be helping the 75 animals that currently reside at the
Humane Society.

Humane Society members said the event has been successful every year.
