Ole Miss announced on Saturday that women’s basketball head coach Adrian Wiggins was placed on administrative leave and two of his staff members, Kenya and Michael Landers, were terminated, in light of an ongoing joint investigation between Ole Miss and the NCAA over “impermissible recruiting contacts and academic misconduct.”

After a disappointing ending to the 2012 baseball season that saw Ole Miss drop two consecutive games that would have sent them to the NCAA Super Regionals, the Ole Miss baseball team returned to the diamond this fall to prepare for the 2013 season.

As a freshman last year, South African Nik Scholtz finished the year ranked No. 14 in the NCAA in singles. His first opponent in the Davis Cup in Montreal, Canada, Milos Raonic, was ranked No. 15 in the world. Raonic won the match 7-5, 6-4, 7-5, but for the reigning Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, the experience is what he will take from the event.

Ole Miss’ true freshman safety Trae Elston has been suspended for Saturday’s primetime ESPN matchup against the No. 14 Texas Longhorns, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday. The league offices announced the suspension was the result of a flagrant hit Elston had on a UTEP wide receiver late in the fourth quarter in the Rebels’ 28-10 win over the Miners last Saturday.

Winning a Southeastern Conference championship, finishing fourth in the NCAAs and competing in the Olympics is quite the resume for any track athlete. But that was just the last four months for Ole Miss sprinter Isiah Young.

The end position got a big boost when highly touted 2012 signee Channing Ward was cleared by the NCAA on Friday. Ward will practice for the first time with the Rebels this afternoon and will more than likely be in an exclusive pass-rushing role early on.

The Rebels received word that Channing Ward -- one of Ole Miss' most high-profiled signees -- had been cleared by the NCAA and will now join the team. Ward can begin practicing in full pads on Tuesday. 
 
Freeze described the process as frustrating.

Despite only seeing the field a few times a game, Ole Miss’ senior punter Tyler Campbell is one of the most important players on the team. While special teams may not receive the glory like offense and defense do, Campbell knows it is still an important part of the game.

“In the mindset of just the general game, everyone knows it is important,” Campbell said. “It is a third of the game — offense, defense and special teams.”

Freshman pole vaulter Sam Kendricks dominated in Oxford as a senior in high school. He managed to go undefeated at home in his last year at Oxford High School. His outdoor vault of 17-0 set the Mississippi high school record in 2011. 

“That was a dream season for me,” Kendricks said.

After leading the Ole Miss women’s tennis team to the most wins in more than a decade and a top 25 final national ranking for the third time in four years, Rebel head coach Mark Beyers has agreed to terms for a new four-year contract.

A record four All-Americans highlight another great year for the Ole Miss men’s tennis team. 

Senior twins Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann, junior Jonas Lutjen and freshman Nik Scholtz earned All-America honors, bringing the total in the history of the program to 28. The Rebels led the SEC and tied NCAA runner-up Virginia for the most All-Americans in the country. This marks the fourth time in six years the Rebels have tied for the most All-Americans in the nation. 

All four helped lead the Rebels to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and a final national ranking of No. 14. The Rebels have proven to be one of the most consistent teams in the nation. In addition to finishing in the top 10 14 times, they have finished ranked in the top 15 a record 17 times since 1994.

During his first season at Ole Miss, Young raced to an SEC championship in the 200 meters. He went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the same event. However, Young was expecting results like this.

“I planned on winning the SEC (championship),” Young said. “Then I was going to try to win Nationals for Ole Miss.”
This wasn’t a childhood dream for Young.

Track and field head coach Joe Walker will lead his final group of Rebels to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships tomorrow in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet will run through Saturday and feature over 20 different events.

The men will enter the meet ranked 14th in the nation. During Walker’s tenure, 11 Ole Miss teams have finished in the top 20 nationally. However, this year Walker’s goal is for the men to finish even higher.

Ten teams entered Hoover, Ala., with different aspirations, but not everyone got what they were looking for as Mississippi State came away with the SEC Tournament championship with a 3-0 win over Vanderbilt.

Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt entered the SEC Tournament with hopes of improving their NCAA tournament stock, while Florida, LSU and South Carolina wanted to make a good showing without getting anyone hurt before regional play begins.

The NCAA second round match between No. 16 seeded Ole Miss and Rice saw a few momentum changes, but it was the Owls who ultimately won some third sets to defeat the Rebels 4-2 May 12 at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center/Galtney Courts. The loss ends the Rebels’ season at 18-9, while Rice advances to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

Murphy Holloway added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Rebels (19-12), who have won four straight and might be able to make a case for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament should they upset Tennessee in their second-round game Friday night.

The Bennie Abram trial is still under way, as the University of Mississippi tries to get the case dismissed. Judge Andrew Howorth will rule on the motion to dismiss soon and is waiting on the plaintiffs to amend their complaints.

The men’s basketball team is set to play No. 1 Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington with hopes of improving their NCAA Tournament chances, and the Ole Miss women’s rifle team will compete in the NCAA Qualifiers back on Kentucky’s campus.
