The minor league baseball season has come to an end with 17 former Rebels on minor league rosters. The Daily Mississippian’s Tyler Bischoff gives an update on how each of the 17 guys did this year.

 
Chris Coghlan – Outfielder – New Orleans Zephyrs (Miami AAA)
 
Coghlan played 39 games for Miami this season, making at least one start at all three outfield positions. He hit .190 with one home run and 10 RBI in 93 at-bats. He ended the season in New Orleans, Miami’s AAA affiliate, where he hit .284, drove in 31 runs and hit seven home runs in 84 games. He also stole 10 bases in 12 attempts.

The Major League Baseball season has been underway for nearly a month, and seven former Ole Miss baseball players started the season in the Major Leagues with another 13 trying to work their way up in the minors. The Daily Mississippian's baseball beat writer David Collier will give you and update on how the big league Rebels are doing so far. 

 

Chris Coghlan – Miami Marlins – Outfielder

Coming back from an injury that kept him out of action most of last year, Coghlan is struggling to return to the form that saw him win Rookie of the Year and make several plays that were featured on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top Ten plays. He has made 19 appearances in games this season and is hitting .118 with two RBI.

Following a series loss on the road at No. 1 Kentucky, No. 18 Ole Miss (21-10, 6-6 Southeastern Conference) will look to get back on track as it takes on the Central Arkansas Bears (13-15, 7-8 Southland Conference) in a double-header beginning at 3 p.m. today at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Each game will be seven innings.

Coming off a huge series win over top-ranked Florida, No. 10 Ole Miss (20-8, 5-4 SEC) will head to Trustmark Park in Pearl in hopes of getting revenge against in-state foe Southern Miss (16-12, 3-3 C-USA) tonight at 6:30 p.m.

The Golden Eagles dominated the Rebels two weeks ago in Oxford in a 10-0 shutout, so the Rebels know they have to put last weekend behind them and move forward.

Sunday’s bottom of the ninth started at 3:41 p.m. Because of travel rules, no inning could start after 3:45 p.m. No. 16 Ole Miss was tied 6-6 with No. 1 Florida in the rubber game of the series. Sophomore catcher Will Allen singled to right-center with one out, and none other than sophomore right-handed pitcher Bobby Wahl, who pitched masterfully in Friday night’s win, came out of the dugout to pinch run for Allen.

The No. 17 Ole Miss baseball team (15-5, 1-2 SEC) welcome the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (11-9) to Oxford today for an in-state showdown at 6:30 p.m. from Oxford-University Stadium/ Swayze Field. The Rebels opened Southeastern Conference play this past weekend, dropping the three-game set against Auburn. Southern Miss enters tonight’s game, losing three of their last four games, including a series loss to Murray State this past weekend. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 against SEC foes this season, splitting a home-and-home series against Alabama and winning at Auburn.

The Rebels clinched a series win against Miami (Ohio) with a 2-1 win Sunday and the Skyhawks are coming off a sweep at the hands of Arkansas-Little Rock this past weekend, including a 12-11 loss in extra innings Sunday.

“I just thought it was a really well played game by us tonight,” head coach Mike Bianco said. “It was a clean game. A lot of guys got in for their first time either this year or in their career. Usually when that happens, there’s some good and bad but more good tonight.”

No. 20 Ole Miss (5-1) pounded out 16 hits and rallied from being down 5-4 to complete the series sweep Sunday with a 10-5 win against UNC Wilmington (2-5).

“I thought we played much better today,” head coach Mike Bianco said. “It was a much better offensive day — a lot more quality at bats. Even though we scored four early and then there was a couple zeros up, I thought today we had much better at bats with runners in scoring position.”

Senior designated hitter Zach Kirksey led the eight-run, 11-hit barrage with a three-run home run in the fourth to lift the No. 20 Ole Miss baseball team to an 8-1 win against Arkansas State in its home opener yesterday at Swayze Field/Oxford-University Stadium.

The Rebels (2-1) used five pitchers, including four freshmen, and limited the Arkansas State Red Wolves (0-3) to just one run on five hits.

Chris Coghlan – Outfielder – Florida Marlins

Coghlan missed the entire second half of the season with a torn meniscus in his left knee. The knee gave him trouble all season as he only hit .230 with five home runs and 22 RBI in 65 games this season. When healthy, he was a regular contributor to Baseball Tonight’s “Web Gems” and Sportscenter’s Top 10 plays.

With the all-star break over and home field advantage going to the National League (more precisely Atlanta in this writer’s hopeful opinion) for the World Series, the second half of the major league baseball season is upon us. With a little more than two months of games still to be played and a high number of teams still in contention, the race for October should be incredibly fun to watch.

Windy Thees, who started the Memphis softball program in 2006 and led the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament this past season, has been named as the head softball coach at Ole Miss, athletics director Pete Boone announced Thursday. 

She compiled a 184-154 overall record in her six years at Memphis, including a school-best 36-14 mark this past season, and guided the Tigers to the Conference USA Tournament each of the last five seasons.

Six Ole Miss baseball players were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player draft this week. David Goforth, Austin Wright, Miles Hamblin, Matt Crouse and Matt Tracy were all taken in day two on Tuesday and Matt Snyder joined them on the third and final day of the draft Wednesday.

Last year, left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz, now in the Cleveland Indians organization, was selected with the fifth overall pick, making him the highest drafted player in Ole Miss baseball history. 

Right-handed pitcher Aaron Barrett (Washington Nationals) and outfielder Tim Ferguson (Kansas City Royals) followed on the draft’s second day, while current Rebels David Goforth and Matt Tracy were drafted on the draft’s third day.

After scoreboard watching and receiving the necessary help to advance to the SEC Tournament and likely the NCAA Tournament with a win at No. 18 Arkansas, the Ole Miss baseball team (30-25, 13-17 SEC) lost both games of a May 21 seven-inning doubleheader, 2-0 and 5-3, respectively.

After moving into a three-way tie for first place in the Southeastern Conference Western Division with a weekend sweep of Kentucky, the Ole Miss baseball team (23-15, 8-7 SEC) visits Auburn (20-16, 7-8 SEC) for a three-game series.

The Ole Miss softball team has taken an unconventional route this year when it comes to players, but the team had no other choice. This year’s 18-player roster includes seven freshmen, five of whom are regular starters.

Not only that, freshman outfielder RT Cantillo leads the team with a .340 batting average, while freshman infielder London Ladner leads the team with five home runs and is tied for the lead with 20 runs batted in.

“Freshman have been the majority of our starters,” Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson said.

The Ole Miss baseball team scored two runs in the eighth, and freshman right-hander Bobby Wahl came on in the ninth, picking up his first career save in a 3-2 win over Kentucky on Friday night.

After a Kentucky solo home run in the third, Ole Miss tied the game in the sixth when junior shortstop Blake Newalu reached on an infield single and scored on a dropped pop-up.

The Hilltoppers pounded out seven runs on eleven hits, but it was a wild pitch by sophomore right-hander Brett Huber in the seventh and an error by freshman shortstop Austin Anderson in the eighth – both with two outs in the innings – that stretched the lead from 4-3 to 6-3.
