The win was an emotional one for the Rebels and it came down to the very last play of the game. The pressure fell on the shoulders of senior kicker Bryson Rose, who had his struggles earlier in the season.

There were about seven minutes to go in the game, and Texas A&M was looking at a third-and-19 on its own three-yard line. Ole Miss was ahead 27-17, and many of the 55,343 spectators in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium were feeling relieved. The Rebels (3-3, 0-2 SEC) were close to getting their first Southeastern Conference win of the year and ending a 15-game SEC losing streak.

As the final installment of a three-part series, The Daily Mississippian football beat writer Bennett Hipp will give a report on Ole Miss’ fall camp, concentrating on the special teams.

KICKER:

The one position group that Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze doesn’t really have to worry about is the special teams, the kicking game in particular.

“That is one place I hope that we are pretty solid,” Freeze said. “I think Bryson (Rose) is as solid as can be, and Tyler (Campbell) is a really good punter. I feel comfortable that we are in OK shape there.”

Greyshirting

A greyshirt is when a recruit delays his enrollment for a semester so his eligibility clock doesn’t start until January of the next year. The player can take less than a full load of classes and work out but can’t practice or play with the team. It is used by schools to create more room to sign players when scholarships are tight.

After an interesting week filled with rumors, speculation and distraction following the loss to Vanderbilt, the effort by the team improved, but the results were not much better in the 27-13 SEC home-opening loss to the Georgia Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1 SEC).

Ole Miss (1-3, 0-2 SEC) ran two trick plays, one a double reverse pass out of the “Wild Rebel” formation and another a reverse handoff on a punt return, that both went for touchdowns.

With college football only a few months away, it’s time to take an early look at the Southeastern Conference heading into the summer months. Each Friday, The Daily Mississippian’s Bennett Hipp will rank the 12 SEC teams by position as part of an eight-week series. Next week: Offensive line

1. Georgia: There’s not a more well-rounded special teams unit than the one residing in Athens. Senior kicker Blair Walsh returns after making 20 of 23 field goals last season for an 87-percent field goal percentage, which was second in the conference. Senior Drew Butler averaged just more than 44 yards a punt last season and is one of the SEC’s best. The Bulldogs also have a nice pair of return men in senior cornerback Brandon Boykin and junior cornerback Branden Smith.

With college football only a couple months away, it’s time to take an early look at the Ole Miss football team. Each Thursday, The Daily Mississippian’s Bennett Hipp will break down Ole Miss position-by-position as part of an eight-week series. Next week: Offensive line

At the kicker position, Ole Miss returns last year’s starter in junior Bryson Rose, as well as backup kicker Andrew Ritter who is also a junior.

Rose impressed in 2010, as he made 16 of the 18 field goals he attempted for an 88.9 percent field goal percentage. That field-goal accuracy tied him for ninth nationally and put him first in the Southeastern Conference. Rose also made 43 of the 44 PAT’s that attempted on the season.

1. Auburn: The Auburn Tigers have it going on in the special teams department with senior Wes Byrum booting field goals through the uprights. Byrum nailed 15-16 field goals last season for the Tigers. Kick returner Demond Washington – a one time Ole Miss commit – had the highest kick return average (31.1 yards) of any player in the Southeastern Conference with a reasonable number of reps.
