Robert Nkemdiche decommits from Clemson

 

Grayson (Ga.) senior defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, the nation's No. 1 football recruit and the brother of Ole Miss redshirt freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche, has decomitted from Clemson. 

 

Neal McCready of RebelGrove/Rivals.com first reported the news Wednesday night and it was confirmed by Will Hammock of the Gwinnett Daily Post Thursday morning.

Final thoughts from the football beat

I stepped on to the Ole Miss football beat for The Daily Mississippian at the beginning of the 2010 football season and immediately realized that the Ole Miss football program, which had won 18 games and back-to-back Cotton Bowls over the past two seasons, was headed in a drastically different direction.

Rebels capture bowl berth with Egg Bowl win

 
For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

Lady Rebels host ‘Kid Day’ Friday

 
The Ole Miss Lady Rebel basketball program will look to continue its successful start to the 2012-13 campaign when they take on Northwestern State Friday morning at Tad Smith Coliseum in the 10th annual “Kid’s Day” game. All local students — eighth grade and under — and bus drivers will be admitted into the game for free.

Letter to the Editor

Open Letter to Coach Freeze:

When I saw you had spoken about the events on last Tuesday evening on campus, I was hopeful to see our head coach take the opportunity to condemn those actions/thoughts/words.
Unfortunately, you took the opportunity to condemn student media and the misuse of the word “riot.”
Maybe you were worried it would affect football recruiting. Don’t you think saying “hateful and racist speech is NOT acceptable and here’s what I plan to do about it” would speak volumes to potential student athletes?

VB looks to snap losing streak on road

 
The Ole Miss Lady Rebel volleyball team will take a five-game losing streak on the road this weekend to play Mississippi State and Arkansas. Earlier this season, at home, Ole Miss defeated Mississippi State 3-1 and lost a four-set match to Arkansas. This past weekend, the Lady Rebels were swept in matches against Tennessee and Florida.

Henderson lifts Rebels past Chanticleers

 
Coastal Carolina gave Ole Miss a scare early with a 39-36 lead at halftime, but junior guard Marshall Henderson helped bring the Rebels (2-0) back, as they dominated the second half and won 90-72.

Henderson led the team in scoring with 27 points, his second straight 20-plus point game to begin his Ole Miss career. He buried six 3-pointers on 13 attempts and has been a source of enthusiasm for the team and the fans.

Laporte excelling after injury last season

 
Redshirt freshman middle blocker Ty Laporte had a frustrating start to her college volleyball career. On the second day of practice last season, she tore her ACL and was forced to sit out the entire year and rehab her knee.

Ole Miss (1-0) is coming off a 93-57 victory against Mississippi Valley State this past Friday, in which six Rebels their Ole Miss debuts. Head coach Andy Kennedy thought the newcomers played fast and that may have caused some turnovers and missed shots.

Some perspective is required when thinking about where the 2012 Ole Miss team realistically is in the aftermath of Saturday’s 27-26 loss to Vanderbilt that clinched bowl eligibility for the Commodores and put the Rebels’ bowl hopes on hold for at least another week.

Missed opportunities

 
The situation Saturday night was all too familiar for Ole Miss. Having the lead with just over two minutes left in the game, a defensive stop would have propelled the Rebels to six wins and bowl eligibility. Instead, they were handed another heartbreaking. This time by the Vanderbilt Commodores, who became bowl eligible themselves with the win.

The Ole Miss men’s basketball team got the season started the right way with a 93-57 win over Mississippi Valley State Friday night at Tad Smith Coliseum.

Over the last two games against Arkansas and Georgia, Ole Miss has found itself unable to move the football on the ground. 
 
The rushing attack was a key factor in the Rebels’ early season offensive success, as the team topped 150 yards rushing in six of their first seven games. However, over the last two weeks, the Rebels have combined for just 123 yards on 66 carries, averaging out to just 1.86 yards per carry.

The Ole Miss Lady Rebels (10-13, 4-10 Southeastern Conference) have dropped three games in a row heading into two home matches against Tennessee (17-6, 10-4 SEC) and Florida (19-4, 13-1 SEC) this weekend. 
 
“It doesn’t get any easier for us,” head coach Joe Getzin said. “We have the No. 16-ranked Gators coming in on Sunday. We open up with Tennessee on Friday night, who just beat Florida to keep them from going undefeated.”
