“The Houston Police Department places the highest value on human life, and events like these are tragic and unfortunate for everyone involved.”
This is what the chief of the Houston Police Department in Texas said after one of his officers shot and killed a schizophrenic, wheelchair-bound double-amputee on Monday. The man had impressively cornered the offending officer’s partner — who was, just so we’re all on the same page here, not missing any of his limbs — in a way so that the partner couldn’t get away.

Fiene, who has been here since this last fall, said he hopes to convey this message to the students in the program. It is offered as both an undergraduate major and a postgraduate degree.

Do you remember that thing called Initiative 26 from this past November? You know, the one that wanted to take away women’s rights, outlaw abortion and essentially outlaw contraceptives? This is also the initiative that was rejected by more than 55 percent of Mississippians.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, the “Personhood” Amendment is back in the great state of Mississippi in the form of legislation.

On paper, Ole Miss is head and shoulders above Alabama, but on the field, that is certainly not the case, especially given the 1-3 record going back to the start of the Auburn series this past weekend.

I’ve tried to discuss issues specifically pertaining to Mississippi lately. Of course, it’s important that we consider global and national issues, but I think state issues are extraordinarily important, especially in a time when our newly elected officials are entering office.

When Ole Miss signed one of the top groups of wide receivers in the country this February, wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer knew that those receivers would have to be ready to step in immediately and see significant playing time this season.

One of those freshman receivers, Donte Moncrief, has done just that and has become the Rebels’ main big play threat at receiver just five games into his college career.

Through those five games, he is averaging over 20 yards per reception and leads all Ole Miss receivers with two touchdown catches.

After a disappointing 2010 campaign, the Ole Miss softball team decided to make a change at the helm.

Enter Windy Thees, a native of Mesa, Ariz., and Florida State alum, but most importantly, a coach who knows how to build a program. She was tabbed as the new coach on June 30.

Thees comes to Oxford from the University of Memphis, where she and her staff started the program in 2006 and led the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament this past season. In her six years, she compiled a 184-154 overall record.

“Looked really bad,” Nutt said. “It’s a little bit of everything. I never felt that way on the sideline. Just didn’t feel right.

“We just didn’t have that confidence. We didn’t make first downs and move the ball like we normally do. That was a first.”

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After months of public nastiness and private negotiations, of court filings and rulings, of players and owners squabbling over more than $9 billion a year, NFL fans finally saw the handshake and heard the words they awaited: "Football's back."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith both used that phrase while standing shoulder-to-shoulder Monday, announcing their agreement on a 10-year deal to end the lockout that began in March.

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) -- The country's most popular sport is in limbo for at least another day.

NFL owners overwhelmingly approved a tentative agreement Thursday to end the lockout, provided players re-establish their union and sign off on the deal. The players, however, didn't vote, saying they had not seen the full proposal.

There are currently over a dozen senior economic and regulatory positions that have opened up since November of last year that have yet to be filled. There is only one reason why this has happened: Any nomination from the Obama administration must be approved by the Senate. Coincidentally enough, last November was when Republicans took the super-majority in the Senate away from Democrats.
