The Ole Miss baseball squad has to replace their two best hitters from last year with first baseman Matt Snyder graduating and signing with the New York Yankees and second baseman Alex Yarbrough electing to start his professional career a year early.

It’s going to be tough to replace those guys, but Rebel signee Chase Nyman is up for the challenge. Nyman, a second baseman from Pascagoula High School, is ready to get his Ole Miss career underway.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Ole Miss struggled a lot this season, and most of those struggles came from a lack of scoring runs. The Rebels answered those problems Friday and Saturday, with wins over TCU and Texas A&M, to advance to the Regional Championship of the College Station Regional.

However, they went back to their old ways as TCU (40-20) came through the loser’s bracket to defeat the Rebels on Sunday and again on Monday night, by the score of 7-3, in front of a crowd of 3,579 at Blue Bell Park to end the Rebels’ season.

However, the Rebels (37-24) are in the driver’s seat of the Regional after defeating the No. 1 seed Texas A&M Aggies (43-17) 6-3 on Saturday night to advance to the Regional Championship in front of an announced crowd of 5.445 at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In their previous two games, TCU had scored a combined 38 runs. They used that confidence as they came away with a 5-2 win over Ole Miss (37-25) on Sunday night in front of a crowd of 3.425 at Blue Bell Park to force a win or go home contest on Monday.

SUNDAY: MISSISSIPPI STATE 4, No. 18 OLE MISS 2

STARKVILLE – For the second week in a row, Ole Miss gave up four runs in the first that ultimately decided the outcome of the game as the No. 18 Rebels (28-16, 10-11 SEC) dropped the series for the second consecutive year to rival Mississippi State (27-17, 10-11 SEC) with a 4-2 loss in Sunday’s series finale.

With their backs against the wall, No. 15 Arkansas (28-12, 9-9 SEC) came out swinging on their way to an 11-3 win over No. 22 Ole Miss (27-13, 9-9 SEC) in Sunday’s series finale to salvage a game before heading home.

The Razorbacks put up four runs in the first inning and three more in the second to end freshman right-hander Sam Smith’s first career Southeastern Conference start in a hurry.

Each game will be seven innings.

No. 18 Ole Miss (22-10) took the first of two seven-inning contests 2-1 against the Central Arkansas Bears (13-16) Tuesday from Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

After giving up a run in the first game of the double-header, No. 18 Ole Miss (23-10) did one better as they shutout Central Arkansas (13-17) 4-0 to complete the sweep of the midweek series.

Ole Miss outclassed Jackson State from the very first pitch last night as the No. 16 Diamond Rebels (18-7, 3-3 SEC) slugged their way to a 12-0 win against the Tigers (16-7).

The Rebels jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, and it all started with two outs. Junior second baseman Alex Yarbrough doubled before senior first baseman Matt Snyder drove him home. Then a walk set up a three-run home run from senior designated hitter Zach Kirksey, his ninth of the season.

The Rebels were out-hit 17-3 and committed three errors, as the team’s losing streak stretches to three games.

There were two outs with nobody on base in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday and No. 12 Ole Miss (15-5, 1-2 SEC) was leading Auburn (12-8, 2-1 SEC) 2-1 in the rubber match of the three-game series. Sophomore right-hander Mike Mayers was one out away from recording a complete game win, but then things fell apart for the Rebels.

“This was just a really good night for us offensively,” head coach Mike Bianco said. “I thought, besides Zach, who has been tremendous and continues to swing a very hot bat, several guys had some good at bats tonight.”

After Friday night’s game had the look of a Sunday game with 17 combined runs, Sunday’s game looked more like a Friday night game as Ole Miss (9-2) clinched the weekend series against Miami (Ohio) (4-5) with a 2-1 win.

The No. 16 Ole Miss baseball team will go for a second sweep in as many weeks when it plays host to the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (3-3) this weekend. 

The Rebels (7-1) have won six straight games, but they will have to play well to come out on top.

Six Ole Miss baseball players were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player draft this week. David Goforth, Austin Wright, Miles Hamblin, Matt Crouse and Matt Tracy were all taken in day two on Tuesday and Matt Snyder joined them on the third and final day of the draft Wednesday.

Former Ole Miss pitcher Lance Lynn made his major league debut last night for the St. Louis Cardinals. 

The 24-year-old right-hander carried a no-hitter into the fourth before giving up a two-run homer to first baseman Aubrey Huff in the inning. The San Francisco Giants went on to defeat the Cardinals 12-7 and Lynn took the loss in the game. He allowed five runs on four hits with five strikeouts in five and one-third innings pitched.

The Ole Miss baseball team scored two runs in the eighth, and freshman right-hander Bobby Wahl came on in the ninth, picking up his first career save in a 3-2 win over Kentucky on Friday night.

After a Kentucky solo home run in the third, Ole Miss tied the game in the sixth when junior shortstop Blake Newalu reached on an infield single and scored on a dropped pop-up.

In softball today it is difficult to find a player who has the ability to do it all, but Ole Miss senior Brittany Barnhill is one such player. Pitching, hitting, playing in the field and serving as a team leader are just a few of the roles Barnhill undertakes for the Rebels.

At 5-foot-11, Barnhill is intimidating on the mound. She is also a useful asset as a first baseman.

“I like to play it all, but pitcher is still my favorite,” Barnhill said. “You have more control over the game.”

Behind the arms of junior right-hander Matt Crouse (3-0) and senior right-hander Jake Morgan, the Ole Miss baseball team (10-1) took the opening game of the weekend series with a 5-1 victory over Tulane (7-3) on a rainy Friday night.

Crouse allowed one run on four hits in five innings before a 50-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth. Morgan took over from there, pitching four scoreless innings to earn his third save of the season.
