Head coach Brett Frank will look to become the second coach to start his career at Ole Miss 2-0. The only other coach to do so was Hall-of-Famer Van Chancellor.

Some perspective is required when thinking about where the 2012 Ole Miss team realistically is in the aftermath of Saturday’s 27-26 loss to Vanderbilt that clinched bowl eligibility for the Commodores and put the Rebels’ bowl hopes on hold for at least another week.

Ole Miss has made significant progress under head coach Hugh Freeze, but there are some things that are beyond a coach’s control.

Depth, for example, is one of them.

Both the Rebels and Bulldogs are coming off conference victories this past Saturday. The Rebels most recently defeated Arkansas, while Georgia took down then second-ranked Florida.

The time slot gives Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze and the Rebels another chance to showcase the program to recruits all over the country. It’s also a time slot that means a lot to Freeze.

The Southeastern Conference rolled out its 2013 football schedule this past Thursday. And upon first glance, it appears SEC commissioner Mike Slive had it out for the Rebels when he and his minions pieced together Ole Miss’ ’13 schedule.

When junior outside hitter Kara Morgan sat out the loss to Alabama last month with an ankle injury, it was apparent that the success of the Lady Rebels volleyball team depended on Morgan’s successes on the court.

Since arriving at Ole Miss, Morgan has been an important asset to the team. Besides sitting out the Alabama game, the Pickens, S.C., native has played in every match as a Lady Rebel, including all 109 sets last season and 70 of the 74 sets this season.

Whitehaven senior running back Mark Dodson Jr. verbally committed to Ole Miss on May 14, and he remains solid in his commitment, as he plans to graduate in December so he can enroll in classes in January and participate in spring practice. Dodson said he currently has straight A’s this semester, which would put him on the path to graduate early.

Most people have their attention on the Ole Miss football team right now, which is steadily improving its play on the gridiron, but the Rebel basketball squad is quietly preparing for the season with a lot of expectations.

Head basketball coach Andy Kennedy held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to discuss the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season. There are a lot of expectations surrounding the program, and this year's team is arguably the most experienced team Kennedy has had.

We move into the halfway point of this fall’s theatrical performance of the 2012-13 school year. Fifty years of integration and a new football coach, record enrollment and an election year: This show has quite a bit going on. So if the whole world is a stage then why is intermission (fall break) not until three weeks before the show’s over until spring?

Turnovers have been an issue for most of the season for Ole Miss, and sophomore quarterback Bo Wallace’s two interceptions Saturday mean that the Rebels will have “more competition this week” at the position, according to Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze.

Ole Miss is the lone Southeastern Conference team that has yet to play a conference opponent. That changes Saturday, when the Rebels head to Tuscaloosa to take on the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide at 8:15 p.m. on ESPN.

“Any time you shut somebody out at the Division I level — everyone has got some playmakers — you’ve had a good afternoon,” head coach Hugh Freeze said.

As the old saying goes, “Everything happens for a reason.”

Yes, it’s one of the oldest cliches in the book, but sometimes it’s really true. At least that is certainly the case for Lady Rebel volleyball senior outside hitter Allegra Wells, who almost never played volleyball.

On Oct. 1, 1962, James Meredith became the first black student at The University of Mississippi. Before and after his official enrollment, violent riots and hate shook the campus and took the focus off of what Ole Miss was known for at the time — the most successful football program in school history.

The Miners of UTEP fell to No. 4 Oklahoma last Saturday 24-7 in a game that had many thinking the Miners had a chance at a major upset. They entered the fourth quarter trailing the Sooners by just three points.

Nineteen Rebels made their first appearances in an Ole Miss uniform Saturday. No debut may have been bigger on the defensive side of the ball than that of redshirt freshman Denzel Nkemdiche, who recorded a team-high eight tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack in Ole Miss’ 49-27 win and played with what Freeze called “reckless abandon.” His numbers could have been even better if not for having to receive an I.V. during the game due to dehydration.

Win the day.

That was first-year head coach Hugh Freeze’s message when he spoke before the Rebel faithful for a capacity crowd at the Gertrude Ford Center last December after being named the new Ole Miss head football coach. Today – one day before he coaches the first game of his tenure – the message remains the same.

Freeze walked into an ugly situation at Ole Miss. The Rebels had just completed one of their worst seasons in history, winning just two games for the first time since 1946.

For many college football players, the offseason is spent dropping weight and reshaping bodies in preparation for the grind of another college football season.

In the case of Ole Miss sophomore defensive end C.J. Johnson, much of his offseason and fall camp was spent making sure he was eating enough in order to gain weight.

After shifting from linebacker to defensive end during his freshman season, Johnson found himself undersized for the position, especially compared to other Southeastern Conference defensive ends.

In this week's installment, The Daily Mississippian's sports editor David Collier will rank the 14 Southeastern Conference teams. Opponents, game times and television networks are also included for each team.

1. LSU (Last Season: 13-1, 8-0 SEC)

The Tigers will be in the national championship discussion again this year. LSU starts the season with a favorable schedule, and they get to play Alabama at home this year. The Tigers will once again rely on their defense, despite the loss of All-American corner Tyrann Mathieu. Zach Mettenberger will hope to give LSU a stronger presence at quarterback that they did not have a year ago.
