A recent report from a parent seeing a Lafayette County School District school bus driver using her cell phone while driving students has sparked questions from local parents and the community. According to an Oxford Eagle article, Diana Wells, a parent of a Lafayette Elementary School kindergartener, claimed to see a bus driver talking on her cell phone while children were on the bus. The consequences of bus drivers using their cell phones while driving children are discretionary and situational, according to Oxford Police Chief Mike Martin.

Neck pain is a common, unpleasant sensations, and it’s becoming increasingly more common. Sometimes referred to as “tech neck,” a stiff, sore neck is often the result of hunching over a laptop or desktop computer for long periods of time. It can also occur if you’re like me and cradle your cell phone between your ear and shoulder. Other common causes are sleeping in an awkward position, frequently carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder or just bad posture.

There are a few things you can do to avoid this neck pain and/or to remedy it if you are already experiencing it.

The Oxford-University community is no stranger to automobile accidents. With a hit and run on campus and some traffic accidents already this year, the question is whether the town and campus are safe for drivers and pedestrians.

There have been close to 268 automobile accidents and an estimated 99 DUIs within the Oxford city limits since January, according to Oxford Police Chief Mike Martin.

Martin said there were minor to no injuries with most of these accidents, and there have been no serious injuries that were alcohol-related.

Boasting the best tailgating scene in the Southeastern Conference, the Grove attracts tens of thousands of people to Oxford on game weekends, which in turn creates a problem every tailgater and game-goer alike has experienced: a lack of cell phone service.
“It’s terrible,” Chase Hall, a music education sophomore, said. “I have to walk around for at least 30 minutes before I’ll even halfway get a signal. I never make calls on game day because I know they won’t go through.”

The Ole Miss student body seems to have missed Dexter McCluster’s plea to not text and drive.

A recent poll conducted by The Daily Mississippian found that nearly half of all respondents text while driving, an additional 24 percent only text at stop lights and another 24 percent talk on the phone but don’t text. Only 6 percent of those polled do not use a cell phone at all while driving. There were 123 respondents to the poll.

With a few days of reflection, commentary on Tuesday’s Internet outage.

It is approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday when I notice the Internet connection at the Student Media Center is down. I ask the newsroom, and learn that this is a campus-wide problem.

“Let me tweet that,” I say. Of course, I then remember I’m in the Dark Ages with my cell phone and the Internet is down, so I scratch that idea.

Thirty minutes later, I get the RebAlert letting me know that the problem is with AT&T in Jackson.

The appreciation of one’s home sometimes comes through separation anxiety.

To translate: You don’t realize what you have until you’re removed from it or it’s taken away. That seems to be the case for me.

I am writing this column while my family and I are on vacation.

The iPhone is no longer exclusive to AT&T.

The iPhone is no longer exclusive to AT&T.

Starting Feb. 10, those with Verizon as their service provider will have the option to purchase an iPhone. This is a large step for Apple and the mobile phone community.

For those who have complained (myself included) of poor AT&T service, we now have some form of respite. Already AT&T is jockeying to steal and/or keep iPhone customers.

Dear Eliza,

Right at the beginning of the semester, I had a huge blowout with a boy I had been talking to all summer. We ended up not being friends at all, and even more drama occurred to the point where I had to move out of my place.
