Professor and historian David Sansing hosted a discussion at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics Thursday morning to assess the progress made at The University of Mississippi since the enrollment of James Meredith.

Professor and historian David Sansing hosted a discussion at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics Thursday morning to assess the progress made at The University of Mississippi since the enrollment of James Meredith. The panel was composed of Sansing; Donald Cole, assistant provost and assistant to the chancellor concerning minority affairs; Valeria Ross, assistant dean of students for multicultural affairs and volunteer services; and former provost Gerald Walton. Nearly 120 students, faculty, administrators and other community members were in attendance.

Recently, the University of Mississippi received a “green light” rating for its permission of free speech on campus, the highest of honors awarded.
The group in charge of the ratings is the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).

Ole Miss has always been a university that promotes free speech on campus. Its new rating comes from the changing of a technical term in order to bring clarity of policies to students and faculty alike.
Assistant Dean of Students Scott Wallace was a driving force behind the adaptation.

Ranked as one of the top five greek schools in the nation, but there is more than just the infamous partying brought forth by popular culture when it comes to the Greek system, as it has raised over $500,000 for philanthropies over the past two years.

Wearing a pink shirt will be more than just a fashion statement Friday.
That’s because the entire campus is being encouraged to wear pink to show support for “Pink Out the Campus Day” in order to promote breast cancer research and to raise breast cancer awareness among students, faculty and university community members.
“We are hopeful that students, as well as university community members, who want to participate will wear pink and help us ‘Pink Out the Campus,’” assistant dean of students Valeria Ross said.

Four years ago this month, University administrators began implementing the current two-strike alcohol and drug policy the University of Mississippi still enforces.

Four years ago this month, University administrators began implementing the current two-strike alcohol and drug policy the University of Mississippi still enforces.

The policy states that if a student is found in violation of the school’s alcohol or drug policy, he or she is issued a strike and therefore put on a probationary period. If the same student receives another strike within the probationary period, he or she is suspended from the University for the remainder of the current semester as well as the following fall or spring semester.
