NEW ORLEANS — After giving up 66 points and 676 total yards to Texas, the Ole Miss defense bounced back and held Tulane to 159 yards of total offense, including just 14 yards on the ground, in a 39-0 win on Saturday.

Ole Miss also forced three turnovers and held Tulane to 2-of-16 on third-down conversions and 1-of-5 on fourth-down conversions.

Ole Miss regained two of their most important defensive players Tuesday in junior safety Charles Sawyer and senior cornerback Wesley Pendleton. Both suffered injuries in fall camp that have sidelined them for some time. Sawyer suffered a torn quadricep, while Pendleton dealt with a sprained MCL. However, both feel they are back and ready for the Rebels’ opener against Central Arkansas.

The Ole Miss defense had a much better day than the offense in the Rebels’ first game week practice of the year on Tuesday, according to head coach Hugh Freeze.

“Defensively, (it was) excellent,” Freeze said. “I thought their energy was great, and I thought their attention to detail was super. They were very coachable. Offensively, I don’t know, we didn’t have any pizzazz. No energy, no bounce in our step like it’s game week.

The Ole Miss football team resumed practice Thursday morning after completing their final two-a-day Wednesday afternoon. Head coach Hugh Freeze was pleased with the way the team responded.

“I knew today would be a challenge because we went almost 200 plays yesterday of full [contact],” Freeze said. “It was a meat grinder. We needed it. I knew this morning the after effects of that could be a challenge, but I did think we found a way to get some good stuff done.”

Switching Things Up On Defense

Ole Miss looks to improve on the defensive side of the ball, as the Rebels were ranked at the bottom of the SEC in total defense this past season. Defensive coordinator Dave Wommack is planning to incorporate his new 4-2-5 defensive scheme to help turn things around. 

“We’re really looking for our guys to play both man and zone coverage," Wommack said. "Especially our boundary corner, he needs to be quick and very physical."

The Rebels were pushed inside to the Indoor Practice Facility yesterday for the eighth practice of the spring due to rain in the area, but they still managed to get plenty of work done.

In Saturday’s 52-7 drumming by the Alabama Crimson Tide, Ole Miss also lost the services of senior cornerback Marcus Temple for the remainder of the season.

Filling in for Temple, who had totaled 28 tackles, two interceptions and one sack before suffering a season-ending right ankle injury, will be freshman two-way player Nickolas Brassell and freshman cornerback Senquez Golson.

Senquez Watch is now officially over. Senquez Golson, a two-sport standout from Pascagoula turned down the Boston Red Sox and elected to return to Ole Miss.

After Saturday’s scrimmage, Golson and his family met with Red Sox representatives in Oxford, before going to Boston to take a physical and continue contract negotiations.

On yet another hot day at the Blackburn-McMurray sports complex, Ole Miss Intramurals held its second intramural tournament of the summer. 

Twenty-three students and faculty members, combining to make 12 teams, came out and participated in the Ole Miss Intramural Disc Golf Scramble.
