Repeat the quick start

This past week against Alabama, Ole Miss jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, thanks to a big pass play from Randall Mackey to Nick Brassell, followed by a short touchdown run from Jeff Scott. The Rebels must do the same this week against Arkansas, which has shown a propensity to come out sluggish and fall behind early in a few games. If Ole Miss wants to keep this game close, an early lead is a must.

Younger players must step up on defense

Defensive line:

The Rebels’ defensive line has been solid so far in 2011 against the pass but has struggled to stop the run. Ole Miss is now faced with the task of replacing senior defensive end Wayne Dorsey, who broke his right arm against Alabama this past weekend. Dorsey was in the middle of an impressive senior season, leading the Rebels in sacks with three and racking up 22 tackles.

A very subpar 2011 season has continued to get worse for Ole Miss, as the Rebels defense lost two of its senior defensive leaders for the season in defensive end Wayne Dorsey and defensive back Marcus Temple.

Both were injured during Saturday’s 52-7 blowout loss to Alabama. Temple suffered a broken right ankle in the first quarter, and Dorsey broke his right arm in the fourth quarter.

Going into Saturday’s game between Ole Miss and No. 2 Alabama, the headlines centered around the Crimson Tide’s prolific defense and Heisman Trophy candidate junior running back Trent Richardson. Unfortunately for the Rebels, they didn’t disappoint.

When defensive end Wayne Dorsey arrived at Ole Miss, he was thought to be a quick fix for a position in need of depth, but the 2010 season didn’t go as well as he had hoped.

But one year later, Dorsey is not only becoming a force on the Rebel defensive line, he is becoming something that is much needed on this young team – a leader.

Wayne Dorsey’s first season in an Ole Miss uniform didn’t go the way he planned.

Ole Miss sputtered to a 4-8 record while Dorsey struggled to make the transition from junior college football to the Southeastern Conference.

With the bad memories of the 2010 season behind him, Dorsey has improved by leaps and bounds in the offseason and is poised for a breakout this season.

Afterwards, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt was impressed by his defense for the second day in a row.

“There is some intensity we are seeing at defense at times,” Nutt said. “Not all of the time, but at times. And I thought the defensive line moved around very well today."

Nutt called out several players on the defensive line and linebacker after practice.

One of the more veteran units on the Ole Miss team in 2010, the 2011 Ole Miss defensive line is much smaller and less experienced than it was a year ago but enjoys a boost in the unit’s athleticism.

After a much-maligned 2010 season in which the defense ranked last in the Southeastern Conference in scoring defense and next to last in total defense, the unit emerged tougher and more aggressive in Saturday’s Grove Bowl and throughout spring practice.

Mackey, who redshirted last year out of East Mississippi Community College, has shown that same ability as Ole Miss has gone through spring practice. The Rebels held their first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, and through five practices Mackey appears to have a leg up on his fellow competitors, juniors Nathan Stanley and Zack Stoudt and freshman Barry Brunetti.
