Ole Miss offensive coordinator David Lee had to change course on Tuesday with the announcement that junior starting quarterback Randall Mackey would be suspended for Saturday’s game against No. 1 LSU and possibly next week’s Egg Bowl at Mississippi State.

One day after Athletics Director Pete Boone and Chancellor Dan Jones announced Houston Nutt’s tenure as Ole Miss head coach would end after this season’s Egg Bowl, some of the assistant coaches shared their thoughts on the turn of events.

“I was surprised and disappointed because I know the amount of time and effort that has been put into it, but, if you’ve been in the game long enough, you know these things happen,” Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix said after practice Tuesday.

Youth movement continues on defense

Heading into Saturday’s game against Kentucky, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt is inserting several freshmen into the starting lineup for the first time.

“I’m anxious to see it game time, but they are taking the game plan in and working hard,” Nutt said. “It’s like swimming, you’ve got to throw them in the water.”

Coming off a deflating 52-7 loss to Alabama just a week ago, the Ole Miss Rebels (2-4, 0-3) look to bounce back this weekend against the visiting No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks (5-1, 1-1).

Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt said it is important for his guys to keep fighting to have a chance against the Hogs, who are also No. 9 in the year’s first BCS Standings.

The Ole Miss Rebels (2-3, 0-2 SEC) will face their toughest opponent to date when the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC) rolls into Oxford this Saturday. 

Ole Miss will do so without senior running back Brandon Bolden, junior center A.J. Hawkins, senior offensive guard Alex Washington and sophomore wide receiver Philander Moore, who will all serve one-game suspensions for a violation of team rules, head coach Houston Nutt said Thursday.

On Saturday, the Ole Miss Rebels (1-3, 0-2 SEC) will be in California to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 WAC) in hopes of putting together a full game and coming away with a much-needed win. The road trip is the furthest out west in program history.

The two teams played last season in Oxford as the Rebels took care of the Bulldogs 55-38, led by senior running back Brandon Bolden’s 228 rushing yards and three total touchdowns in the game.

The Ole Miss Rebels will host the Salukis of Southern Illinois in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m., as they look to get their first victory of the season.

The Rebels led 13-0, but suffered a devastating 14-13 loss to BYU in last Saturday’s season opener.

Southern Illinois, which went 5-6 a season ago with a 4-4 record in conference play, is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Salukis got off to a good start last Saturday defeating Southeast Missouri 38-10.

Going into the Ole Miss football team’s second scrimmage of the fall camp Saturday, there were several key factors that had yet to be determined.
However, no question loomed larger than who will be the starting quarterback when the season begins.
“All three of them can move the team,” Rebels’ offensive coordinator David Lee said of the quarterbacks. “All three of them can play and all three of them have something they do very well and have a facet to them that can help us.

With the University of Mississippi instituting the new School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the search is underway to find qualified professors for the multiple new classes being offered in the fall. 

Since the university is cutting costs at every opportunity, school officials have decided to keep the search internal for the time being and fill the positions with current faculty and staff where possible.

The Ole Miss defense had a boost earlier this spring with the news of defensive end Kentrell Lockett’s return, but the unit took a hit on Monday with the loss of standout linebacker DT Shackelford.

The Ole Miss defense had a boost earlier this spring with the news of defensive end Kentrell Lockett’s return, but the unit took a hit on Monday with the loss of standout linebacker DT Shackelford.

Shackelford left Monday’s practice with an apparent knee injury, and on Tuesday a University spokesman announced that the linebacker had torn his right ACL. Shackelford is set for surgery in the next two weeks, and recovery time is expected to take anywhere from six to eight months.
