As the final installment of a three-part series, The Daily Mississippian football beat writer Bennett Hipp will give a report on Ole Miss’ fall camp, concentrating on the special teams.

KICKER:

The one position group that Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze doesn’t really have to worry about is the special teams, the kicking game in particular.

“That is one place I hope that we are pretty solid,” Freeze said. “I think Bryson (Rose) is as solid as can be, and Tyler (Campbell) is a really good punter. I feel comfortable that we are in OK shape there.”

After a spirited and high intensity practice Monday night, the Ole Miss football team was looking to keep things on track Tuesday morning. However, things did not go quite as head coach Hugh Freeze would have liked them to.

“A very challenging practice,” Freeze said. “Just did not have the energy that we╩╝ve had. We tried to manufacture some and it got a little better.

Despite only seeing the field a few times a game, Ole Miss’ senior punter Tyler Campbell is one of the most important players on the team. While special teams may not receive the glory like offense and defense do, Campbell knows it is still an important part of the game.

“In the mindset of just the general game, everyone knows it is important,” Campbell said. “It is a third of the game — offense, defense and special teams.”

With college football only a couple months away, it’s time to take an early look at the Ole Miss football team. Each Thursday, The Daily Mississippian’s Bennett Hipp will break down Ole Miss position-by-position as part of an eight-week series. Next week: Offensive line

At the kicker position, Ole Miss returns last year’s starter in junior Bryson Rose, as well as backup kicker Andrew Ritter who is also a junior.

Rose impressed in 2010, as he made 16 of the 18 field goals he attempted for an 88.9 percent field goal percentage. That field-goal accuracy tied him for ninth nationally and put him first in the Southeastern Conference. Rose also made 43 of the 44 PAT’s that attempted on the season.
