1. Road experience

This will be the first true road game of the year for Ole Miss (Sorry, Tulane doesn’t count). Bryant-Denny Stadium will be packed and loud for an 8:15 p.m. start on ESPN.

For Ole Miss, a team playing a large number of freshmen and redshirt freshmen, this will be its first taste of Southeastern Conference road play. Saturday’s game will allow younger players to get road jitters out before heading into conference road games that are winnable later in the season.

When Ole Miss faces No. 1 Alabama on the road Saturday to open Southeastern Conference play, they’re backs are against the wall. The Rebels continue to rebuild under first-year head coach Hugh Freeze, while the Crimson Tide look stronger than last year’s national championship team.

The Oxford, Ala., native said the good-natured ribbing has already begun via text messages from friends back home in preparation for Saturday’s Alabama game in Tuscaloosa.

“I’ve pretty much gotten a few text messages,” Elston said. “A lot of my friends go to Alabama, and they talk a few trash words and all that. Not too much.”

Junior Barry Brunetti took first-team snaps at quarterback, while sophomore Bo Wallace was sidelined with a right sprained shoulder that he suffered this past Saturday against Tulane.

"Bo could've done some stuff today, but we just weren't going to," Freeze said. "He wanted to, but we just told him no."

Ole Miss is the lone Southeastern Conference team that has yet to play a conference opponent. That changes Saturday, when the Rebels head to Tuscaloosa to take on the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide at 8:15 p.m. on ESPN.

They are taking the field again Sunday to perform the halftime show of the New Orleans Saints-Kansas City Chiefs game. Assistant Director of Bands Randy Dale said the band, which was invited to perform at the game in May, will perform the same halftime show it did for the Texas game this past Saturday.

In this week’s edition of a weekly feature, The Daily Mississippian football beat writers Bennett Hipp and Matt Sigler, sports editor David Collier and managing editor Austin Miller answer four questions regarding the week’s matchup.

1. How do you think Tulane handles the adversity of playing their first game after the serious injury to Devon Walker?

Bennett Hipp (@bennetthipp): I think it'll be very emotional for them as they get back in the swing of things for the first time since the injury. I don't expect the game to be very close, but I'd be shocked if Tulane gave Ole Miss anything but its best shot as they honor Walker.

In this week’s installment, The Daily Mississippian football beat writer Bennett Hipp gives keys to this week’s matchup.

1. Flush the Texas game

Both Hugh Freeze and members of the Ole Miss team have mentioned not letting Texas beat them twice. Freeze’s team experienced failure for the first time this season and in a particularly rough fashion.

It will be important for the Rebels to come out and play like it’s any other game, instead of stepping onto the field with the memories of the Texas game in the front of their minds.

2. Retooling the secondary

There is only one more nonconference game on the schedule for Ole Miss, and the Rebels (0-2) are hoping to take full advantage of it heading into Southeastern Conference play. The Rebels will take on Tulane (0-2) Saturday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

The Rebels are coming off a 66-31 loss to No. 14 Texas, while the Green Wave are trying to bounce back from a 45-10 loss to Tulsa. The meeting is the 71st between the two teams, with Ole Miss leading the series 42-28.

Still was the first commitment the Rebels received for the 2012 class as he committed April 21. At his current size, he projects to play at guard at the next level and should be a good one. In addition to Ole Miss, Still claims offers from Tulane and Memphis.

Although I’m not so sure there would be such a backlash after the Alabama series loss if it wasn’t for another series loss to Tulane two weekends ago, I nevertheless saw some interesting things being said on the Internet.
