The University of Mississippi’s Oxford campus has been named one of the top-10 best campuses to be on this fall. The list, compiled by thebestcolleges. org, ranked Ole Miss second behind Mount Holyoke College, a liberal arts school in South Hadley, Mass. Ole Miss and the University of Florida were the only two Southeastern Conference schools to make it on the list of predominately northern universities.

As the Texas Longhorns head into Oxford the first time, they will battle an Ole Miss team that has a chip on their shoulder. They’ll face a squad that is trying to show the nation that last season was a fluke. This Rebel team is looking to make a statement that Ole Miss football is back.

Before anyone goes crazy, no, I don’t mean back to where they should or want to be. But they are certainly making progress one day at a time.

Many accounts of the patch of grass situated in the middle of our campus bring to mind William James’ description of an ineffable religious experience: Often those writing about the Grove contest that the experience cannot be properly put into words.

As we plow through the papers and midterm exams in this hellish week, there is a light at the end of the tunnel: Spring Break. What a wonderful, carefree week of tanning, beaches, hiking, drinking with your friends and chatting with your family, for those of you who are going out of town. There will be some students who choose, for financial or personal reasons, to stay in Oxford for the break.

As members of the Ole Miss family, we have a special mindset. We have certain standards for who we welcome into our family.

As members of the Ole Miss family, we have a special mindset. We have certain standards for who we welcome into our family.

A stroll through the Grove on a Saturday in the fall will prove that: beautiful women in colorful sundresses, gentlemen in sports coats and old men in sweater vests. Other than those types of people, there isn’t much room for outsiders.

This concept saddens and frightens me, but it is how we have done it in Oxford for as long as anyone can remember.

This past weekend was a proud one for the Ole Miss campus. Ten outstanding students were inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining countless others who have contributed effort and energy into their time here as undergraduates.

As Rebels, our nature is to be somewhat arrogant. The Ole Miss "swagger” has existed for as long as anyone can remember — the pretentious looks we give to our opponents in the Grove, the enormous amount of pride we have for every single tradition Ole Miss possesses and the overall feeling of vast superiority at outside events are things every Rebel who has walked the halls of Ole Miss treasures. Outsiders view our attitude as arrogant or snooty; we tend to think of it more as a way of life. The creator of the expression, “We aren’t snobs, we’re just better than you,” must have attended Ole Miss.

This is the second entry in a new feature here at thedmonline.com, the "[Fill in the Blank] of the Week." It's an opportunity for us to highlight people, places or things that are part of the Ole Miss experience.

To the Editor:

What a relief to read Chancellor Jones’ letter to the university and its alumni about the smear campaign going on within our Ole Miss community.

While walking through the mile long, grassy parking lot that Fresno State calls their tailgating site, the Hotty Toddy chant is sung in the distance.
Even though the Rebels are playing 1,700 miles away from Oxford, there is no shortage of fan support.
“I’m really loving it, the new ‘Grove’ that we made is really fun,” said Ann Elizabeth Miller, an Ole Miss alumna from Collierville, Tenn.

While Saturday’s game may have pitted two disappointing football teams against each other, the real match-up was that of two top 5 ranked party schools.
Over the summer, Princeton Review released its college rankings, announcing Georgia as the No. 2 party school in the nation, with the University of Mississippi right behind them at  No. 3.
Even though they are ranked ahead of the Rebels, many Georgia fans were more than impressed with what the small Mississippi school brought to the table with tailgating.

Fellow Rebels,

It goes without saying that this past week has been one filled with disappointment. This letter is not intended to remind us of what has been talked about since the first turnover last Saturday.

The University of Mississippi possesses many unique characteristics.

In the new “Why I chose Ole Miss” video released by the university, freshmen generally answered the question with, “This is just the place that felt right to me.”
Ole Miss is an appealing place, especially for younger folks.

What makes us so appealing? Our attitudes.

The Ole Miss attitude is one of great complexity. One cannot truly understand what it is to be a Rebel until he or she actually becomes one.

Houston Nutt doesn’t care that you are wearing a new dress.

Barry Brunetti doesn’t care that you didn’t smuggle in enough airplane bottles and need to return to The Grove for a refill.

While doing my research on the first group of fans that will visit our community and campus (and subsequently the Grove) this weekend, I tried to put myself in their shoes and imagine what my walk around Ole Miss would be like this Saturday.

At the conclusion of this past Ole Miss athletic year, there was an overwhelming feeling of disappointment and anger. With the Rebel fan base rapidly growing frustrated with the administration and wanting some change, a small group of people have taken action to help give the fans a voice.

Enter Forward Rebels, a new organization created by local alumni who are tired of the status quo and want to give other fans a chance to voice their frustrations in an organized manner.

I’ll be perfectly honest: Before I stumbled upon the Croft Institute for International Studies in a Google search, I had never considered going to Ole Miss. In fact, my first day on campus for a college visit in November 2009 was also my first day in Mississippi.

June 15, 2011

As I walked through Central Park on a dreary Saturday afternoon, I began to miss my Mississippi home. The trees reminded me of my backyard and I yearned for a sweet Southern breeze.

A sweet breeze is hard to come by in NYC. In a place so congested and fast-paced, the serenity of home is all but lost.

Ole Miss quarterback Randall Mackey’s Hail Mary pass was intercepted and subsequently fumbled by linebacker Ralph Williams on the last play from scrimmage, and Grove Bowl 2011 ended mercifully in a 17-17 tie Saturday afternoon at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

This weekend was by far remarkable

This weekend was by far remarkable.

It was one that brought tears to many eyes and joy to many hearts as Ole Miss collaborated in a weekend of service through Relay for Life and the Big Event.

The amount of service that was exhibited this weekend cannot be quantified, but it has definitely been appreciated.

We often bear that title of the party school or the uppity school.

Winter has passed, and spring is finally here. For the rabid faithful that support Ole Miss baseball, that means a return to Swayze Field at Oxford-University Stadium.

Winter has passed, and spring is finally here. For the rabid faithful that support Ole Miss baseball, that means a return to Swayze Field at Oxford-University Stadium.

And for students, the place to be is in right field, where thousands watch the Rebels play baseball from late February to early June.
