The situation Saturday night was all too familiar for Ole Miss. Having the lead with just over two minutes left in the game, a defensive stop would have propelled the Rebels to six wins and bowl eligibility. Instead, they were handed another heartbreaking. This time by the Vanderbilt Commodores, who became bowl eligible themselves with the win.

In this week’s edition of Four Downs, The Daily Mississippian football beat writers Bennett Hipp and Matt Sigler, sports editor David Collier and managing editor Austin Miller answer four questions regarding the week’s matchup.

1. How does Ole Miss respond after a heartbreaking loss a week ago?

Bennett Hipp (@bennetthipp): I think Ole Miss will respond very well. The attitude this week around the team has portrayed a group that has moved on from the loss and is eager to get that elusive Southeastern Conference win. I’m expecting Ole Miss to play well.

After facing an effective scrambling quarterback last weekend in freshman Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, the Ole Miss defense will once again have to prepare for the unexpected when the Rebels (3-3, 0-2 SEC) take on Auburn (1-4, 0-3 SEC) this Saturday.

Auburn has had its share of struggles on the offensive side of the ball this season, but Ole Miss defensive coordinator Dave Wommack said that at some points it is like the Tigers are running five or six different offenses.

October 10, 2012

Already extremely young on the defensive side of the football, Ole Miss added another true freshman to the mix when the Rebel defense took the field for the first time against Texas A&M.

Defensive back Mike Hilton made the first start of his young career at the huskie position and received his first extensive playing time as well.

That step, he said, was “to get into the fourth quarter with some of these conference opponents that are really good teams and us learn from that regardless of the outcome.”

There were about seven minutes to go in the game, and Texas A&M was looking at a third-and-19 on its own three-yard line. Ole Miss was ahead 27-17, and many of the 55,343 spectators in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium were feeling relieved. The Rebels (3-3, 0-2 SEC) were close to getting their first Southeastern Conference win of the year and ending a 15-game SEC losing streak.

1. Will one of the quarterbacks solidify himself as the starter for the rest of the season?

Bennett Hipp (@bennetthipp): I think if Bo Wallace starts and plays well, he can take a step toward solidifying himself. I’m not sure one game is enough to make it a done deal, as he’ll have to limit interceptions and turnovers going forward no matter what.

Third Downs

Texas A&M and Ole Miss are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to third-down conversion percentage on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, Ole Miss is first in the Southeastern Conference in converting first downs, with a conversion percentage of 51 percent. That number will be put to the test against the Aggie defense, which is allowing opponents to convert just 26 percent of third downs, which is also first in the conference.

The Ole Miss Rebels return to the friendly confines of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday night after a two-game road trip. The Rebels (3-2, 0-1 SEC) will welcome Southeastern Conference newcomer Texas A&M (3-1, 1-1 SEC) to Oxford for a 6 p.m. kickoff on ESPNU.

The Rebels are coming off a hard-fought loss to No. 1 Alabama this past weekend, while the Aggies defeated Arkansas last weekend 58-10 and appear to be settling into the SEC well so far. Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze knows he and his team will have a tough challenge this weekend.
