The Ole Miss men’s basketball team was definitely struggling as they headed into the LSU game on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Rebels had lost three games in a row and five of their last six.

Despite the rough patch, the players and coaches insisted there were games still to play, and they weren’t quitting on the season. After a blowout win against LSU, Ole Miss followed with an impressive road win against Arkansas.

Saturday’s game against Alabama was no different. Alabama jumped out to an 11-7 lead with 10:03 to play in the first half, which would prove to be its largest lead of the game. Ole Miss grabbed its first lead at the 7:42 mark in the first half and took the lead for good with 6:41 to play before the half. The Rebels finished the first half on a 14-2 run and went into halftime with a 28-17 lead.

The second half saw more offense from both teams; Alabama quickly cut the 11-point deficit to four early in the second half. Ole Miss called a timeout and stretched the lead back to eight, and Alabama (20-10, 9-7 SEC) would never get within five points as Ole Miss (18-12, 8-8 SEC) closed out its regular season with a 60-51 win to earn the No. 7 seed in next week’s Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The Ole Miss men’s basketball team returns home this weekend after picking up a big midweek win on the road Tuesday at Arkansas.

Southeastern Conference Tournament seeding will be on the line when Ole Miss (17-12, 7-8 SEC) hosts Alabama (20-9, 9-6 SEC) in Saturday’s regular-season finale. Ole Miss is currently tied for sixth place in the league standings with Mississippi State and LSU. With a win, the Rebels would get the No. 6 or 7 seed, depending on results of Mississippi State (vs. Arkansas) and LSU (at Auburn). With a loss, the Rebels could get the No. 6, 7 or 8 seed depending on results.

Vanderbilt (17-8, 6-4 SEC), a team which has lost three of its last four games, presents an opportunity for a quality win against a team with a No. 29 RPI and a No. 5 strength of schedule.

Current Ole Miss players Terrance Henry and Reggie Buckner have teamed up with former Rebel and current Detroit Piston Terrico White on a team (the Cavs) in the league.
