The Ole Miss women’s soccer team (12-7, 5-7 SEC) will wrap up its 2012 regular season against Mississippi State (8-10-1, 1-10-1 SEC) tonight in Starkville. The two teams will be competing for the Magnolia Cup, which Ole Miss won last season with a 2-0 win against the Lady Bulldogs in Oxford. The Lady Rebels lead the overall series 10-5-3 and has won four of the last five meetings between the two teams.

However, this weekend presents an opportunity to reverse that trend as the No. 18 Rebels (27-14, 9-9 SEC) travel to Starkville to take on the Bulldogs (25-16, 8-10 SEC) in a pivotal Souteastern Conference matchup.

The No. 14 Ole Miss men’s tennis team heads to Starkville this weekend for the 2012 SEC Championship in hopes of strengthening its case for hosting a regional in the NCAA Tournament. The Rebels (11-7, 7-4 SEC) are seeded No. 5 in the tournament and will begin play today at 5 p.m. against No. 12 seed Arkansas (13-12, 1-10).

The Ole Miss baseball team (24-12), now ranked No. 22 in the nation, will try to get back on track following a series loss at Georgia over the weekend when they take on in-state foe Mississippi State (21-15) in the annual Governor’s Cup tonight at Trustmark Park in Pearl at 6:30 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Three Ole Miss athletes earned a weekly award from the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday, as junior Isiah Young was named men's runner of the week, junior Ricky Robertson was tabbed co-men's field athlete of the week, and senior Logan Waites garnered co-women's runner of the week honors.

Mason Perry Jones, 21, of Jackson, was arrested in DeSoto County on March 26 on capital murder charges, said MSU Police Chief Georgia Lindley.

When the Rebels (14-8, 4-4 SEC) travel to Starkville tonight to take on the 18th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs (18-5, 5-3), they will try to return to Oxford with their first season sweep of their in-state rival since 1998. 

The two teams last played on Jan. 18 with Ole Miss pulling the upset 75-68 in Oxford. In that win, junior forward Reginald Buckner scored a career-high 19 points to go along with 15 rebounds, and three other players scored in double figures for the Rebels.

The Ole Miss volleyball team finished its season this past week on a high note with a win against Southeastern Conference foe Alabama in four sets (25-23, 24-26, 25-20, 25-18). The Rebels (11-17, 7-13 SEC) were able to go out on a two-game winning streak, which included a straight set victory on the road in Starkville against Mississippi State.

Despite one of the roughest conference starts imaginable, the Rebels were still able to tie for third in the Western division of the SEC.

When it was announced on Nov. 7 that head coach Houston Nutt would not return next season, he remained to coach the last three games of the 2011 season. It was not the swan song Nutt had in mind. After blowout losses to Louisiana Tech and No. 1 LSU at home, the Houston Nutt era at Ole Miss (2-10, 0-8 SEC) reached its conclusion on a rain-soaked Saturday night in Starkville.

“If we play anything like we have been, I think we can handle them,” head coach Joe Getzin said. “Of course it really doesn’t matter in a rivalry match like that. It’s all emotion and keeping that in check.”

It started with a 31-30 signature win over No. 4 Florida in the Swamp, included back-to-back wins over LSU and finished with the second of back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins. However, after a disappointing 4-8 season, followed by a 2-7 start to this season, Athletics Pete Boone announced that the 2011 football season will be the last for head coach Houston Nutt.

According to local law enforcement officials, the number of arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol has increased in both Oxford and Starkville.

Oxford Police Chief Mike Martin stated that 296 DUI arrests have occurred so far in 2011, in contrast to 274 arrests in 2010, an 8 percent increase.

Imagine the Magic School Bus. Now add a chicken coop, a garden and some blueberry bushes. While this bus doesn’t fly or travel through time, it does operate entirely on used vegetable oil and solar power.

That’s exactly what six recent graduates from the Mississippi School of Math and Science created with the Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi.

A motion to permanently extend the sale of on-site retail alcohol to 2 a.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays was denied by the Board of Aldermen last Tuesday. 

Currently alcohol sales go until 1 a.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and end at midnight on Saturdays. 

Dee Hobbs, a business attorney in Oxford, brought forth the motion. Hobbs represented K & J enterprises, who own the Library Bar and Grill.

After falling behind 3-0 to No. 9 Georgia on Friday night at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, the No. 25 Ole Miss men’s tennis team could have easily given in.

However the Rebels (10-5, 4-3 SEC) continued to battle, clawing their way back into the match before ultimately falling 4-3.

“Georgia did a great job jumping on us in doubles,” Ole Miss coach Billy Chadwick said. “It seemed like it was an uphill battle from the beginning.”

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State (14-12, 6-6 SEC) used solid defense and an inspired second-half effort to defeat Ole Miss (17-10, 5-7 SEC) 71-58 in Starkville on Saturday for the team’s second win over the Rebels this season.

The Bulldog defense stifled the Ole Miss offense, giving up only one three-point field goal in the second half on 16 attempts.

The Rebels made only four 3-pointers on the afternoon on 24 total attempts.

It’s a must-win game.

It’s not the rivalry that makes this game a must-win, it’s the implications the outcome will have on which team gets the West’s second bye in March’s SEC Tournament.

“Now, us, Arkansas and State are all 5-6 (in the SEC) so everyone’s kind of jockeying,“ said Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy.
