Bolden addresses and apologizes for suspension

The 2011 football season has been one of highs and lows for senior running back Brandon Bolden. After fracturing his ankle in the season opener against BYU, Bolden was sidelined for the Southern Illinois game. He then returned to the field before he was scheduled to and played sparingly against Vanderbilt and Georgia. The next week at Fresno State, Bolden had his best game of the season and rushed for two touchdowns.

Quarterbacks:

Through six games, Ole Miss has started three different quarterbacks, which is never a good thing. Junior Randall Mackey was in line to open the season as the starter, but was suspended for that game against BYU. He played parts of games against Southern Illinois, Vanderbilt and Georgia before earning the first start of his career against Fresno State, where he played well. He struggled this past week against Alabama, and he has plenty of areas to improve as the Rebels start the second half of the season.

Playing Vanderbilt, a team near the bottom of the SEC every year, seems like it would be a lucky draw, but somehow, the Commodores have had the last laugh in the series.

When defensive end Wayne Dorsey arrived at Ole Miss, he was thought to be a quick fix for a position in need of depth, but the 2010 season didn’t go as well as he had hoped.

But one year later, Dorsey is not only becoming a force on the Rebel defensive line, he is becoming something that is much needed on this young team – a leader.

Ole Miss begins Southeastern Conference play Saturday in Nashville against Vanderbilt, and starting junior quarterback Zack Stoudt couldn’t be more excited.
During his recruitment when he was at Iowa Western Community College, Stoudt cited playing in the SEC as one of the reasons he chose the Rebels.

“That was the ultimate deciding factor,” Stoudt said. “I told Kansas I just couldn’t pass up playing in the SEC.

Nutt impressed with Vanderbilt’s 2-0 start

“Vanderbilt is a very good football team,” Nutt said. “They play extremely hard. We always catch them early when they are healthy, fast and confident.”

An improved defense for the Commodores

“Their defense is relentless and fast,” Nutt said.

When senior running backs Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis were ruled out for this past Saturday’s game against Southern Illinois, sophomore running back Jeff Scott knew he was going to get his shot.

He responded with what became his best game as an Ole Miss Rebel, rushing for 118 yards and three touchdowns, while also returning a punt for a touchdown.

Scott racked up over 200 total yards for the second time in his career, the first coming last season against LSU.

1. Slow down the Salukis’ run game.

Last season, Southern Illinois averaged 189.5 yards a game on the ground, and they bested that number in the season opener last week with 240 rushing yards in a 38-10 win over Southeast Missouri State last Saturday.

The Ole Miss Rebels will host the Salukis of Southern Illinois in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m., as they look to get their first victory of the season.

The Rebels led 13-0, but suffered a devastating 14-13 loss to BYU in last Saturday’s season opener.

Southern Illinois, which went 5-6 a season ago with a 4-4 record in conference play, is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Salukis got off to a good start last Saturday defeating Southeast Missouri 38-10.

To throw salt on the Rebel’s wounds for Saturday’s 14-13 loss to BYU, the Rebels lost both of their senior running backs in starter Brandon Bolden and his backup Enrique Davis.

Bolden’s injury looked to be extremely serious and possibly season-ending, but Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt got some good news Monday when he learned that Bolden will likely be out only three to four weeks.
