As the Ole Miss women’s soccer regular season comes to an end, it’s also nearing the end for the three Lady Rebel seniors, midfielders Alix Hildal and Meghan O’Rourke and defender Emily Sinovich.

For these three veterans, it is all about enjoying it while it lasts. The team honored them Sunday on senior day during a pregame ceremony before the final home game of their careers.
 
“It was special what they did for us,” Hildal said.

The Associated Student Body (ASB) has a full day of activities planned for 130 students touring The University of Mississippi campus from Myrtle Hall Elementary in Clarksdale to experience what it’s like to be an Ole Miss Rebel.

“I hope the impact on these kids is that they will come here and get really excited about being on a college campus, and that they know that it’s possible for them, one day, to go to college,” ASB president Kimbrely Dandridge said.
The students are part of a Spanish emergence program at Myrtle Hall, where half of their curriculum is instructed in Spanish.

The University of Mississippi will host its first Dance Marathon for the Children’s Miracle Network in the spring of 2013.

The University of Mississippi will host its first Dance Marathon for the Children’s Miracle Network in the spring of 2013.

Dance Marathon is a nationwide philanthropy movement on college and high school campuses to raise money for their local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Proceeds from Ole Miss’ Dance Marathon, called Rebel THON, will go to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

Martina Cotelo, senior director of fundraising for Rebel THON, heard about Dance Marathon from an Ole Miss graduate while in Washington, D.C.

That was first-year head coach Hugh Freeze’s message when he spoke before the Rebel faithful for a capacity crowd at the Gertrude Ford Center last December after being named the new Ole Miss head football coach. Freeze walked into an ugly situation at Ole Miss. The Rebels had just completed one of their worst seasons in history, winning just two games for the first time since 1946.

Sophomore Kara Morgan is no stranger to the sport of volleyball. Standing at 6’1,’ Morgan’s presence on the floor intimidates players game in, game out. The Pickens, S.C., native lettered all four years of high school and also earned Class 3A State Player of the Year in 2008.

“I’ve been playing volleyball since about fifth grade,” Morgan said. “My whole family is really athletic at any kind of sport.”

Senior Morgan Springer has provided consistent play for the Ole Miss Rebel volleyball team throughout her career. 

The libero has become what one could call the “dig master,” after recording her thousandth career dig last season. For the past two seasons, Stringer has started every match at the libero position. 

The libero in volleyball is a defensive specialist position that wears a different-colored jersey from her teammates, remains in the game at all times and is not limited by substitution rules that other players are.

The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships start today on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, featuring the best of the best from across the nation.

The Ole Miss Rebel track and field team sends a school-record 16 athletes to the four-day event with hopes of bringing home a national title.

 This year’s NFL Draft, which returns to prime time for the second-straight year, offers fans a reprieve from the on-again, off-again news of NFL labor situation.
The first round takes place on Thursday night at 7 p.m., followed by the second and third rounds on Friday night at 5 p.m., and the fourth through seventh rounds on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Mississippi District 19 Representative Mark Duvall said that since he proposed a bill to bring Colonel Reb back as the University of Mississippi’s mascot, his email inbox has been filled with messages of both support and outrage.

Mississippi District 19 Representative Mark Duvall said that since he proposed a bill to bring Colonel Reb back as the University of Mississippi’s mascot, his email inbox has been filled with messages of both support and outrage.

Duvall said he has received some messages containing signatures of support for the bill, and other e-mails saying the state should not be meddling in the affairs of the University.

On campus, the views among students are similar.

Colonel Rebel, that genteel old Southern gentleman, has been wrapped in controversy over the past several years, and last week whatever chances he had of coming out of “retirement” were put to rest with the announcement of the new Ole Miss on-field mascot, the Rebel Black Bear.

This past March, a group of students made a connection between the Rebels on the gridiron and the rebels in the Star Wars film series.
