I will begin this letter by saying that I don’t know you, and I don’t know Jamal. I don’t know why you scribbled “blacks are known to steal,” racial slurs and other profanity in Sharpie pen across his dormitory door.

A great column appeared in Tuesday’s Daily Mississippian written by my friend, Tim Abram. It’s the best opinion column I’ve read as a student here at The University of Mississippi — and it’s a message all of our students need to hear. Mr. Abram spoke of the tacit approval of racism on our campus, which has allowed the problem to persist since integration in 1962.

Or do.
But let’s think about all the things that you’ve experienced thus far in your life: You were born, you learned how to use a toilet and walk, you went to kindergarten, and then did nothing interesting but go to school for 16 years. Holy cow! What a snoozefest!

With two more chances left to find a sixth win and clinch bowl eligibility, Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze took some time in his weekly Monday press conference to talk about just how much it has taken for the Ole Miss program to get to this point at 5-5 with LSU and Mississippi State left to go.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to canvass for President Barack Obama with the Ole Miss College Democrats. Mississippi State Rep. Tommy Reynolds provided the transportation to Florida, and once we got there, he provided the inspiration for the volunteers.
I recall him explaining why he drove us 11 hours to campaign in the heavily contested state of Florida.
“I’m in this for my son,” Reynolds said.

The 2012 Presidential Election has been called “The Social Media Election,” and the essence of that label played itself out in the disturbance on campus at The University of Mississippi. The events Tuesday have stirred up controversy, both on a regional and national level.

When reading a recent article in the New York Times about Amazon and its apparent goal of monopolizing the bookselling industry, one sentence in the story stood out as an epiphany to me.
A sentence from the article “Booksellers Resisting Amazon’s Disruption” reads: “Amazon can do many things, but it still cannot let readers examine a book before buying.”

Last year I told you about some scary movies you should consider to get you in the Halloween spirit. Would you like some more of that? Good. I tried to make my choices a little more obscure this time in an effort to help you broaden your horizons. Just remember, it’s Halloween. Everyone’s entitled to one good scare.

One of many bright spots this season for the Ole Miss football team is the emergence of freshman huskie Mike Hilton. The Fayetteville, Ga., native came out of Sandy Creek High School as a highly-touted offensive player, but found himself on the other side of the ball at the college level.

The admission of James Meredith, the first black person integrated into Ole Miss, created an integration struggle that allowed prejudice to hang heavily in the air.

I mean, really though, who didn’t laugh at Joe Biden’s derisive reactions during the vice presidential debates? Probably Republicans, now that I think about it, but if you’re not a Republican, I bet you were having a grand time. When Obama or Romney make snarky remarks to each other, my friends and I start laughing because we’ve finally got a glimpse of how enraged these candidates are at each other for spreading so many lies over the last eight months.
Incivility makes candidates human.

Have you noticed the incessant Facebook posting and tweets regarding this year’s Presidential election? For some reason, a larger portion of the general public and in my opinion, a larger portion of our generation, is paying greater attention to the elections this year. While I think it’s awesome that so many citizens are thinking about who will run the country, I also think there are a few general thoughts or guidelines that people should consider when discussing politics or thinking about the upcoming elections.
First of all, don’t take politics personally.

In light of this year’s celebration of 50 years of integration at The University of Mississippi, many question the relative lack of diversity among university faculty and staff.
Accounting professor Annette Pridgen said that there is still much work to do to achieve a fully diverse community at Ole Miss.
“I think they do need to hire more minority faculty,” Pridgen said. “I also think that it would help, as far as staff goes, to increase diversity in the staff and the doctoral program, who will be future faculty members.”

Tasked with preparing for Auburn and recovering from a devastating loss to Texas A&M, Wallace was also worrying about his sister Baylee, who suffered a fractured neck in an automobile accident last Monday.

New York prog-rockers Coheed and Cambria can be a tough sell.  They combine a plethora of different styles, with influences ranging from Rush to Iron Maiden to The Band.  All they’re albums are concept albums, based on an epic science fiction story conjured up by lead vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez.  Sometimes their music is a bit out there.

Despite the fact that it came in second to “Hotel Transylvania” at the box office this weekend (damn you, Adam Sandler), “Looper” is a movie that everyone should be seeing, loving and trying to wrap their minds around.

To be a freshman and be a leader, particularly in the Southeastern Conference, is rare, in the words of head coach Hugh Freeze. However, Ole Miss redshirt freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche has done just that.

“There’s no age, there’s no perfect rubric for being a leader,” Nkemdiche said. “If you want to be courageous and step up and lead by example, lead vocally, why not? If my teammates take that into their perspective and respect that, why not keep doing it and show up every weekend?”

This past Sunday I saw Christian apologetic Larry Taunton speak at First Baptist Oxford. I approached him afterward to discuss the themes of his message, but he was busy greeting others and helping his Fixed Point Foundation sell DVDs he teased at during his sermon. He dismissed himself once those who were interested in purchasing merchandise had dispersed, showing no interest in speaking with me.

“I believe in segregation like I believe in Jesus.”
The previous statement is entirely fictitious. Admittedly embellished, as well, yet it embodies the ideology of some of those who were strongly opposed to James Meredith enrolling in classes at The University of Mississippi.
Meredith had to overcome more than Ross Barnett’s personal rejection to the university. He had to overcome more than the then-chancellor’s comment that his denial of admittance was not contingent on him “being a Negro.”
