Local bars and Oxford police are dealing with an increased number of people who have been drinking on the Square on any given night. During the fall, the party is mainly in the Grove on football game days, but for the rest of the school year, the Oxford Square is the place to go for a good time. This party atmosphere on the Square every weekend has forced bar owners, bartenders and Oxford police to evaluate the best ways to deal with people who have been drinking.

Oxford’s very own Emiliegh’s Bakery has been around for about 10 years. Its catering business started one Christmas when owner Linda Fleming and a friend decided to make gift baskets.

The IntoxBox is a wall-mounted, touchscreen machine that has the capability to measure a patron’s blood alcohol content.

Rooster’s Blues House and the Burgundy Room above Old Venice Pizza Co. are the first two homes of the IntoxBox.

Oxford is often referred to as a cultural haven, so it may be surprising that until Friday, March 2, there was no record store in town.

The End of All Music is a new store in Oxford that sells new and used vinyls, record players and other hard-to-find trinkets that are dated but still used today. 

Owner Bruce Watson and general manager David Swider started cultivating their idea around November 2011 and in nearly four months had the store ready for customers.

Monday night at Irie on the Square, Lafayette High School quarterback and Oxford native Jeremy Liggins stood up and faced a capacity crowd with five helmets of college teams on the table. Those five helmets represented Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn. Quickly, Liggins reached out and grabbed the LSU helmet, saying simply, “Go Tigers, baby.”

For many, the thought of Liggins choosing a school other than Ole Miss on the Oxford Square seemed strange, but the 6’4,” 275-pound quarterback said that wasn’t really the case.

Two months and $37,000 later, Oxford Police Department’s security cameras on the Square are still filming in an effort to decrease crime.

 

Two months and $37,000 later, Oxford Police Department’s security cameras on the Square are still filming in an effort to decrease crime.

After working on the idea of adding 10 extra video surveillance cameras on the Oxford Square since April, the Oxford Board of Aldermen approved the purchase July 5, and the cameras were installed on Aug. 15 by the Madison-based company ADGIX.

Square Toast for Scholarships is a walking wine- and food-tasting event spread across several restaurant and business venues on the historic Oxford Square.

In front of the courthouse on the Oxford Square Wednesday night, a “Vote No for Amendment 26” rally took place. 

Amendment 26 is on the ballot for the Nov. 8 election, and has been controversial within the state.

Betsy Chapman, an organizer of the event, referred to the event as the “Save the Pill Rally.”

Waymon Russell, 40, and Justin Carol, 26, both of Collierville, Tenn., have been apprehended after a police chase that led to the lockdown of Oxford High School on Wednesday, March 23.

Waymon Russell, 40, and Justin Carol, 26, both of Collierville, Tenn., have been apprehended after a police chase that led to the lockdown of Oxford High School on Wednesday, March 23.

Both men have been charged with at least three counts of burglary with further charges pending. According to Oxford police chief Mike Martin, Carol and Russell have been linked to four burglaries in the Oxford area.

As the University of Mississippi’s student population continues to increase, parking and traffic will become more of an issue on and around the Oxford Square.

At first glance, the problem could be attributed to rapid growth in the city of Oxford. However, city planner Tim Akers says the “growth” is due to recent annexation.  

Akers said he admits the numbers can be misleading.
