Rumors, reports and all kinds of bad history abound in the wake of Ole Miss’ fourth-quarter collapse Saturday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Rumors, reports and all kinds of bad history abound in the wake of Ole Miss’ fourth-quarter collapse Saturday.

With the 30-13 loss at Kentucky, the Rebels’ Southeastern Conference losing streak stands at 12 games, the longest in school history. And, for the first time since 1950, Ole Miss has lost to Vanderbilt and Kentucky in the same season.

Suffice to say, there’s uncertainty surrounding head coach Houston Nutt’s future, or lack thereof, in Oxford.

AUBURN, Ala. — Despite trying to change things up this week, the result in this weekend’s Ole Miss game remained the same as the No. 23 Auburn Tigers scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to win 41-23 over the Rebels Saturday night on the Plains of Auburn. It was Ole Miss’ 11th straight Southeastern Conference loss, dating back to last season.

Coming off a deflating 52-7 loss to Alabama just a week ago, the Ole Miss Rebels (2-4, 0-3) look to bounce back this weekend against the visiting No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks (5-1, 1-1).

Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt said it is important for his guys to keep fighting to have a chance against the Hogs, who are also No. 9 in the year’s first BCS Standings.

In Saturday’s 52-7 drumming by the Alabama Crimson Tide, Ole Miss also lost the services of senior cornerback Marcus Temple for the remainder of the season.

Filling in for Temple, who had totaled 28 tackles, two interceptions and one sack before suffering a season-ending right ankle injury, will be freshman two-way player Nickolas Brassell and freshman cornerback Senquez Golson.

Going into Saturday’s game between Ole Miss and No. 2 Alabama, the headlines centered around the Crimson Tide’s prolific defense and Heisman Trophy candidate junior running back Trent Richardson. Unfortunately for the Rebels, they didn’t disappoint.

The Ole Miss football team hasn’t had many bright spots this season as they started the season 1-3, but one of those bright spots is freshman two-way player Nickolas Brassell.

Coming out of South Panola High School, Brassell was rated a four-star recruit by Scout.com and Rivals.com. In Saturday’s 27-13 loss to Georgia, he scored his first career touchdown on a punt return. Sophomore running back Jeff Scott fielded the punt. Brassell then took the reverse handoff and went 81 yards for the score.

Lee makes changes

After taking Ole Miss nearly two full games before their offense saw the end zone for the first time against a FBS opponent, the Rebels hit the playbook this week, but this time to take out plays.

“I think we just cut out 30 percent of our plays and eliminated one protection totally,” first-year offensive coordinator David Lee said after Tuesday’s practice.

Nutt said he hoped the battle between sophomore Barry Brunetti and juniors Randall Mackey and Zack Stoudt would be settled in the next week or two.

"What we are hopefully going to do is get this thing situated here within the next 10 to 12 days, but we just can't put a time table on it," Nutt said of the quarterback battle. "We have to do it when we know that's the right guy.

For the second day in a row, Head Coach Huston Nutt has pleased with the overall performance of the team, most notably the play on the defensive side of the ball.

“We came out here and tried to correct from yesterday,” Nutt said. “I thought we got some things corrected."

Nutt said despite the heat's impact on some player's concentration, the defense made a solid showing.

Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt met with members of the media Thursday afternoon after freshmen and transfers arrived.

Nutt told those gathered that everyone except defensive back Denzel Nkemdiche and defensive end Kameron Wood reported to camp.

Nutt said he expects Nkemdiche to report soon.

“It’s just some little school stuff," Nutt said. "We thought he was cleared. He went to summer school all summer (at Ole Miss), so I feel real good about it.”

Raven, a four-star prospect on Rivals.com and a three-star on Scout.com, decommitted from Ole Miss a few weeks ago on an official visit to Utah, but reaffirmed his commitment Tuesday night after flirting with Texas A&M, Michigan and Alabama.
