1. How much does Bo Wallace play?

Bennett Hipp (@bennetthipp): To me, it depends on how the game goes. If Alabama jumps out to a big lead early, and the Crimson Tide defense is teeing off on Wallace, it would make sense to limit his playing time to make sure he’s healthy for potentially winnable games coming up on the schedule.

In this week’s installment, The Daily Mississippian’s sports editor David Collier will rank the 14 Southeastern Conference teams. Opponents, game times and television networks are also included for each team.

1.     Alabama (1-0, 2nd last week)

The Crimson Tide had a lot of new guys playing bigger roles, and there were some question marks about how soon they would play well as a unit. Those questions were answered in Alabama’s 41-14 drubbing of Michigan this weekend.

This week: Western Kentucky (1-0), 2:30 p.m., SEC Network

2.     LSU (1-0, 1st last week)

1. LSU (Last Season: 13-1, 8-0 SEC)

The Tigers will be in the national championship discussion again this year. LSU starts the season with a favorable schedule, and they get to play Alabama at home this year. The Tigers will once again rely on their defense, despite the loss of All-American corner Tyrann Mathieu. Zach Mettenberger will hope to give LSU a stronger presence at quarterback that they did not have a year ago.

This week: North Texas, 6 p.m., ESPNU

After signing day 2012 was complete, the new Ole Miss coaching staff turned its full attention to the 2013 recruiting class. So far, the Rebels have fared well on recruiting trail, reeling in six verbal commitments heading into May. Here’s a look at the players they have committed:

April 25, 2012

In 1837, the year Martin Van Buren succeeded Andrew Jackson in the presidency and the year Michigan became the 26th state admitted to U.S., three pioneers, all named John, bought 50 acres of land from two Chickasaw Native Americans, Princess Hoka and E Ah Nah Yea. They named that 50 acres after a town in England to promote an air of class to their new settlement.

This weekend will mark Oxford’s 175th birthday since that purchase.

Why is it that someone is more willing to help you or work with you if they know who you are? I’ve been contemplating this for a time, but we’ll come back to it.

While the purpose of affirmative action is to promote equal opportunity, it also aims to compensate for the history of racial issues our country has faced.
