On Monday, Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze and recently hired athletics director Ross Bjork hit the road to begin the Rebel Road Trip, a six-day, exclusive tour of Mississippi and the surrounding areas.

The Rebel Road Trip is a concept designed by the Ole Miss sports marketing team with initiatives to make the eight alumni stops Freeze is required to make due to contract obligations, as well as give the Rebel faithful a closer look at Freeze and Bjork.

The University of Mississippi Athletics Department wants more students at home games, and it is aiming to encourage this by exchanging points for attendance.
The new Rebel Rewards program is fairly simple. Students will simply scan their ID cards at sporting events and receive points. As students go to more events and earn more points, they will be eligible for prizes.

Just when things seem like they can’t get any worse, they do. That’s not to say it won’t get even worse because it can with unanimous No. 1 LSU and in-state rival Mississippi State coming up to finish out the Houston Nutt era in Oxford.

This past Monday, Ole Miss (2-8, 0-6 SEC) fired Nutt but also announced he would coach the remaining three games.

Ever since Colonel Reb was removed from the sidelines of University sporting events in 2003 the students at Ole Miss have been clamoring for a mascot to represent them.

In 2009, then Associated Student Body President Artair Rogers set in motion the idea of a new mascot for the University.

In 2010 13,310 alumni, faculty and students showed enough support for Rebel Black Bear that it was chosen to be the new mascot for Ole Miss. Only 3,366 students voted.

Rebel has already made two public appearances in hospitals outside of Oxford, and the black bear is set to be unveiled soon at the University of Mississippi, though Thompson would not release specifics.

Although the University has not announced a date yet, Thompson said he predicts Rebel will be seen on campus within the next few weeks.

This afternoon, Rebel the Black Bear will make his first public appearance at Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson, followed by a visit to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis on Wednesday.

On Feb. 11, I conducted an interview with Michael Thompson, Ole Miss Senior Associate Athletics Director for Communications and Marketing. Thompson had much to say about the Ole Miss atheltics brand and how he plans to grow it in the future. Unfortunately, thanks to a snafu by yours truly and a dead laptop, the transcript of this interview never saw the light of day until now. While this interview took place nearly a month ago, it nevertheless provides quality insight into Thompson's philosophy in regard to marketing Rebel athletics.

Shame on those of you who are down on Ole Miss basketball.

Shame on those of you who are down on Ole Miss basketball.

Chris Warren and Zach Graham played their last regular season game at the Tad Pad on Saturday, and most of you stayed home.

Sure, we had some tough losses this year. Mississippi State swept us. We blew a 20-point lead to a hapless Auburn team last week. But for Pete’s sake, it was senior day and half the student section was empty.

Most of my friends gave me excuses for not coming. “We suck” was popular.

Michael Thompson, Ole Miss senior athletics director for communications and marketing, spoke at length with The Daily Mississippian sports editor Paul Katool about his plans for Rebel athletics. Here’s what Thompson had to say on improving attendance at Ole Miss basketball games:

On the lack of basketball attendance...
When I was here from 1989-2001, that Coliseum was crazy; it was nuts. I remember waiting in line to get tickets. I remember waiting in line to get into the game, I remember wanting to get there early.

Thompson, Ole Miss Senior Associate AD for Communications and Marketing, is only six months into his job that includes overseeing the Rebels’ external marketing efforts and all components of media and public relations. Cast into the proverbial fire, Thompson was immediately charged with taking Rebel from the concept board to the side lines of Ole Miss sporting events and beyond.

From the 40-minute conversation I had with Thompson, I gathered a wealth of information that will be presented in Q&A form in Thursday and Friday's edition of the Daily Mississippian.

Talk about the job that baseball coach Mike Bianco has done.
That’s another one where he’s set the standard so high that you think in terms of being in a Super Regional and disappointed to a certain extent.

Like I tell him he’s the reason that our expectations are that high. Year in and year out he puts a great team out there.
