For these three veterans, it is all about enjoying it while it lasts. The team honored them Sunday on senior day during a pregame ceremony before the final home game of their careers.

“It was special what they did for us,” Hildal said.

When a player is in their first year with a team, they do not expect to see much playing time. That is just how the world works. The Ole Miss women’s soccer team is the exception to that rule. The Rebels have 11 freshmen and most of them have seen playing time, while three have started all seven games in defenseman Samantha Sanders, defenseman Jessica Hiskey and defenseman/midfielder Maddie Friedmann.

For the girls, already playing and producing on the field this early in their college career did not come as a shock.

The Lady Rebel soccer team kept their momentum going as they fished up nonconference play by defeating the UAB Blazers 4-1 on Friday night to improve to 7-0, which matches the 2003 season for the best start in program history. With all the hype and discussion surrounding college football’s National Signing Day, the Ole Miss women’s soccer team had some big recruiting news of its own that went under the radar.

On National Signing Day last week, Ole Miss signed 10 players from all over the nation. The class, ranked 21st nationally, is one of the best in the history of Ole Miss soccer. It consists of one goalkeeper, four defenders, two midfielders and three forwards.

The Ole Miss soccer team finished its season Friday. Over the next two days, soccer beat reporter Jake Thompson looks back at the 2011 season and looks ahead to next season and the future of the program.

With the 2011 season in the books, it is now time for the Ole Miss soccer team to look ahead and prepare for next season. The biggest challenge head coach Matt Mott faces is the loss of three defenders along the team’s backline.

“We are going to have to have some freshman on the back line, as we lose Meredith (Snow), Kendyl (Mygatt) and Abbie (Curran) back there, so that will be some transition for us,” Mott said.

The Ole Miss soccer team’s season ended this past Friday on a bittersweet note. The team won its last three games, but missed out on a Southeastern Conference Tournament berth by one point.

The Rebels’ season could not have started any better, winning the first three games by a combined score of 11-0, and they were on pace for their best start in over five years.

The Ole Miss soccer team needed two things to happen for its season to continue past Friday night. The Rebels needed a win over Mississippi State and Auburn to win or tie against Alabama.

The Ole Miss soccer team needed two things to happen for its season to continue past Friday night. The Rebels needed a win over Mississippi State and Auburn to win or tie against Alabama.

Ole Miss took care of business, defeating Mississippi State 2-0 to reclaim the Magnolia Cup, but Alabama scored in the 88th minute to win 3-2 over Auburn Friday night. With their win, the Crimson Tide clinched the eighth and final spot in this week’s Southeastern Conference Tournament as the Rebels’ season ended Friday night.

One spot, three teams. That is the backdrop for Ole Miss (7-10-1, 3-7 SEC) when they face in-state rival Mississippi State (6-9-3, 3-6-1 SEC) in Friday night’s Magnolia Cup. More than the Magnolia Cup, however, will be on the line, as a win Friday night would get the Rebels one step closer to the eighth and final spot in next week’s Southeastern Conference Tournament.

In the first of what head coach Matt Mott has called a “three game tournament”, Ole Miss (6-10-1, 2-7 SEC) shut out Vanderbilt (8-9; 2-7 SEC) 3-0 Thursday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

“I felt it was a total team effort for us,” Mott said. “Any time you can get a shutout in the SEC is great.”

Junior midfielder Dylan Jordan got Ole Miss on the board early in the match with a one-touch goal off a pass from senior defender Kendyl Mygatt in the 7th minute.

After a pair of losses to Florida and South Carolina this past weekend, the Ole Miss soccer team finds itself at the bottom looking up in the Southeastern Conference standings.

There are only three games left in the season and if the Rebels (5-10-1, 1-7 SEC) plan on making it to the SEC tournament, they are going to have to make up ground, starting with the Vanderbilt Commodores (8-8, 2-6 SEC) tonight.

Ole Miss is just four points back of eigth place Mississippi State and Alabama.

SUNDAY: SOUTH CAROLINA 3, OLE MISS 0

With only four conference games left entering Sunday’s matchup, the Ole Miss soccer team needed a victory in the worst way. Unfortunately for them, the Gamecocks of South Carolina (12-5, 6-2 SEC) were in no mood to help them out, as they defeated the Rebels (5-10-1, 1-7 SEC) 3-0.

“We didn’t take care of the little things, and in this league you’ve got to be sharp and you got to be good every game,” head coach Matt Mott said of his team’s performance.

October 13, 2011

This is a “do or die” weekend for the Ole Miss soccer team, as they fight for a spot in the eight-team Southeastern Conference Tournament. With five games left in the season, the Rebels are in last place in the SEC, but only one game back of eighth-place Arkansas and Vanderbilt.

Ole Miss (5-8-1, 1-5 SEC) heads into the weekend with a pair of must-win matches against No. 11 Florida (12-3, 5-1 SEC) Friday night and South Carolina (10-5, 4-2 SEC) Sunday afternoon.

October 6, 2011

After splitting a pair of key Southeastern Conference games at home last weekend, the Ole Miss soccer team (5-6-1, 1-3 SEC) hits the road again.

The “road warriors,” as Ole Miss head coach Matt Mott has called his team this season, will head to Tennessee (9-3, 2-2 SEC) and Georgia (8-4, 2-2 SEC) this weekend.

For the second week in a row, the Rebels start their weekend playagainst a top-20 team in No. 20 Tennessee Friday night.

October 4, 2011

Freshman goalkeeper Kelly McCormick is having a solid start to her career as a member of the Ole Miss soccer team. McCormick recorded her first solo shutout against Alabama Sunday and holds a 2-1 record in five games played this season.

Ole Miss head coach Matt Mott also realizes the talent in McCormick and has noticed her improvement as the season has progressed.

“She covers the ground really well,” he said. “She covers the goal well. Her kicking game has improved. I think her awareness on the field has improved.”

SUNDAY: OLE MISS 3, ALABAMA 0
The game was a must-win for Ole Miss. Riding a four-game losing skid, including their first three SEC games, the Rebels (5-6-1, 1-3 SEC) found what they were looking for in a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon over Alabama (6-3-2, 1-2-1 SEC)
“That’s a complete game for us,” Ole Miss head coach Matt Mott said. “That’s 90 minutes we defended very well, we scored three, I think, really good goals. That’s the kind of performance we’ve been wanting.”
