Billy Jean Forrest is interested in exploring health care in Mississippi because she never had it, and Martina Cotelo wants to explore her German-Jewish ancestry because her grandmother sought asylum in a foreign land.

Cotelo, of Oxford, and Forrest, of Randolph, are winners of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College’s 2011 Barksdale Award, which granted each of them $5,000 to fund their studies.
