The college admissions process is something most of us would never like to have to relive.
It’s a stressful time filling out applications, writing variations of the same personal statement and dealing with the attendant stress of finding a large or small envelope in the mailbox. However, for one girl, though she graduated from LSU this past May, she will have to relive this time of her life in front of the Supreme Court.

After playing two different positions earlier during his time at Ole Miss — quarterback and wide receiver — senior Randall Mackey has found a new home at running back this season. It’s been a long process from where he started to now, but at running back, Mackey is finally starting to see the results he had hoped for.

In this week’s installment, The Daily Mississippian’s sports editor David Collier will rank the 14 Southeastern Conference teams. Opponents, game times and television networks are also included for each team.

1. Alabama (2-0, 1st last week)

The Crimson Tide steamrolled Western Kentucky to get the 35-0 win last weekend. It was a nice break for Alabama before they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. this week to face the Razorbacks. Despite the Arkansas upset last weekend, it should still be an electric atmosphere and the Crimson Tide's first real road test.

This week: at Arkansas (1-1), 2:30 p.m., CBS

2. LSU (2-0, 2nd last week)

Oxford mayor Pat Patterson met with the ASB Cabinet on Sunday night. During his meeting with us, we discussed numerous topics ranging from student behavior leaving the Square to student involvement in the community. I wish to discuss both topics he raised.

In today’s political climate, one may find it difficult to believe that politicians engage in any meaningful conversation with constituents. Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson, however, took the opportunity to meet with the Associated Student Body Sunday to discuss the recent rise in crime around the Square, the difficulty of growth in the Oxford-University community and opportunities for University of Mississippi students to get involved in the community.

The Rebels’ 28-10 win over the visiting Miners of Conference-USA not only gave Ole Miss their same win total from 2011’s disappointing 2-10 season, but it was the first time Ole Miss opened the season 2-0 since defeating Memphis and Southeastern Louisiana in 2009. It was also the first time the Rebels won back-to-back games since wins over Fresno State and Kentucky in 2010.

1.     Alabama (1-0, 2nd last week)

The Crimson Tide had a lot of new guys playing bigger roles, and there were some question marks about how soon they would play well as a unit. Those questions were answered in Alabama’s 41-14 drubbing of Michigan this weekend.

This week: Western Kentucky (1-0), 2:30 p.m., SEC Network

2.     LSU (1-0, 1st last week)

1. LSU (Last Season: 13-1, 8-0 SEC)

The Tigers will be in the national championship discussion again this year. LSU starts the season with a favorable schedule, and they get to play Alabama at home this year. The Tigers will once again rely on their defense, despite the loss of All-American corner Tyrann Mathieu. Zach Mettenberger will hope to give LSU a stronger presence at quarterback that they did not have a year ago.

This week: North Texas, 6 p.m., ESPNU

BATON ROUGE, La. – Freshman Sam Kendricks broke the school record in the pole vault to highlight Ole Miss’ performance at the LSU Alumni Gold meet on Saturday.

He was previously second-best in school history after jumping a 17-8.5 at the Florida Relays earlier this month. The Oxford native broke the school record with a height of 17-11 Saturday and improved his national ranking to seventh. The former school record of 17-10 was set by Baker Vinci in 1985.

Of course, by picking and choosing for reasons other than timeliness or importance, one stands a very good chance of demonstrating that dreaded word most journalists despise: censorship.
After all, freedom of speech and freedom of the press are very near and dear to our hearts and are what our profession is all about.

Entering Saturday’s game, Ole Miss and LSU were two teams headed in opposite directions.

The Rebels had lost three games in a row and five of their last six.

The Tigers, on the other hand, had won four in a row and five of their last six. Ole Miss looked to turn things around and get some revenge for the 81-55 beating they took in Baton Rouge to open Southeastern Conference play back in January.
