Each year, students, parents, locals and people from across the South head to Oxford for a weekend filled with entertainment, and The Double Decker Festival packed people onto the Square this past Friday and Saturday in honor of local art and tradition.

Each year, students, parents, locals and people from across the South head to Oxford for a weekend filled with entertainment, and The Double Decker Festival packed people onto the Square this past Friday and Saturday in honor of local art and tradition.
With an estimated 55,000 people in attendance throughout the course of the weekend, stores and restaurants were packed, and parking was hard to come by. No one seemed to mind, though. With the sun shining down and a weekend of beautiful weather, Double Decker was the perfect excuse for a walk to the Square.

Fifty years ago, James Meredith and a few companions began a march from Memphis to Jackson to encourage blacks living under Jim Crow laws to register to vote. 

 

Fifty years ago, James Meredith and a few companions began a march from Memphis to Jackson to encourage blacks living under Jim Crow laws to register to vote. 

Today, participants in the Walk Against Fear will walk from Batesville to Oxford to recreate Meredith’s walk, hoping to spread awareness about civil rights violations immigrants suffer today. 

Patricio Gonzalez, Jose Salazar and Ingrid Cruz will lead the walk. 

They expect to arrive in front of the Lyceum at approximately 7 p.m.

This year, the city of Oxford will celebrate its 175th birthday. The anniversary celebration will kick off at the beginning of the Double Decker Festival, April 27-28, and last until the July 4.

Mayor Pat Patterson, who is involved with planning events for the celebration with the directors of tourism in Oxford, said it is an honor to be mayor during this exciting time.

What a wonderful, carefree week of tanning, beaches, hiking, drinking with your friends and chatting with your family, for those of you who are going out of town. There will be some students who choose, for financial or personal reasons, to stay in Oxford for the break.

The Oxford Film Festival has entertained citizens of Oxford for nearly a decade, and this year, the OFF crew is asking for more involvement from the festival-goers — particularly from those in fraternities and sororities at the University of Mississippi.
The film festival will kick off its ninth season at The Lyric tonight and spend the rest of the weekend at the Oxford Malco theater. Those in charge are looking to the Greeks to take a bigger part in this year’s festival.

The UMAA campaign Forward Together has now raised over $59 million since beginning its capital campaign fundraiser in August to build a new basketball arena and add seating to bowl in the North Endzone of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium by the start of the 2015-16 school year.

The goal of Forward Together is to raise $150 million through a diverse, mixed-funding approach. Forward Together celebrated reaching the $25 million fundraising mark at the end of September and reached the $50 million mark in early January.

Oxford often finds itself in national headlines, mostly due to the University of Mississippi. The school has been named one of the best places to work and one of the most beautiful campuses. Oxford itself has also been named one of the coolest college towns.

However, there is another accolade Oxford has received that may be surprising to some people.

Over the past 10 years, the college town has been on various lists as one of the top places to retire.

This coming weekend the Square will host about 55,000 people from across state for the 16th annual Double Decker Art Festival.

The event is hosted by the Oxford Convention and Visitors Bureau and will be stretched over two days, featuring several headlining musical guests.

In past years, the festival has been fit into one day, but this year Okkervil River, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, and Old Crow Medicine will perform Friday night while Saturday will feature 136 artists as well as eleven bands throughout the day.

After the first successful Art Crawl, Oxford will play host to its second and final crawl of the season April 26. 

After the first successful Art Crawl, Oxford will play host to its second and final crawl of the season April 26.  

“Our first one was very successful, and we had some venues that had over 100 people visit, which is a nice number for an art venue,” said Wayne Andrews, executive director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council.  

For the second outing, more restaurants and sponsors have joined the crawl to offer sponsored tastings at each location, Andrews said.

Austin Evans and Richard Patrick, the creators of Cathead Vodka, will donate $1 from every bottle sold in the state of Mississippi to the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council in order to support live music.

About 55,000 residents throughout the South will find themselves in Oxford on April 29 and 30 for the 16th Annual Double Decker Art Festival.

Musical guests will appear Friday night on the south stage with an admission fee. The price has yet to be determined.

A contract for the purchase of property for the new location of Oxford High School has been approved by the Oxford School District Board of Trustees.

A contract for the purchase of property for the new location of Oxford High School has been approved by the Oxford School District Board of Trustees.

The district will spend $3,481,000 for 65 acres of property. The property owners, Thomas Webb Avent, Jr. and Murray Avent, will also donate an additional ten acres to the district.

The 75-acre property is located in the Oxford Commons area on Sisk Avenue. The location is across the street from Della Davidson Elementary.
