Coming off back-to-back losses this past week against top-ranked Kentucky and Vanderbilt, the Ole Miss men’s basketball team returns to the road tonight, travelling to Rocky Top to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. Both teams are long shots for the NCAA Tournament at this point, but it’s a key match-up for two middle-of-the-pack Southeastern Conference teams looking to finish the season strong and improve their seeding for the SEC Tournament March 8-11 in New Orleans.

Sometimes, getting out of our little haven in North Mississippi is just what the doctor ordered.

I love Oxford.

It is a beautiful, unique and vibrant college town.

But sometimes, getting out of our little haven in North Mississippi is just what the doctor ordered.

I know that I am not the only student who felt exhausted after the late-September-through-mid-October point in the semester that I have dubbed “Midterms Season.”

SUNDAY: TENNESSEE 3, OLE MISS 2

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kara Morgan put down a career-high 18 kills and was one of three Rebels to tally double-digit kills, but the effort came up just short following a late Lady Vols rally as Ole Miss (5-11, 1-7 SEC) fell to No. 19 Tennessee (15-2, 8-0 SEC) by a score of 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 13-15) on Sunday.

The Ole Miss volleyball team will take their roughest road trip so far this season, as they travel to Lexington to face Kentucky (14-3, 5-1 SEC) and then to Knoxville to face No. 19 Tennessee (13-2, 6-0 SEC) this weekend.

“It doesn’t get any easier for us,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin said. “We got to buckle down and get some things done this week.”

The Rebels (5-9, 1-5 SEC) are coming off a disappointing week in which they lost matches to Alabama and in-state rival Mississippi State.

The University of Tennessee administration hit another home run Monday when it announced the firing of basketball coach Bruce Pearl.

The University of Tennessee administration hit another home run Monday when it announced the firing of basketball coach Bruce Pearl.

I just don’t understand getting rid of a guy who resurrected the basketball program and made it more prominent, at present, than Tennessee’s storied football program. Pearl took the Volunteers from irrelevancy to the Final Four’s doorstep. Not many guys could do that in Knoxville.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – This year’s Ole Miss football team has seen its fair share of rough days, but Saturday’s game against Tennessee might have been a season low for the Rebels.

On the first play from scrimmage Saturday morning in Knoxville, it was easy to get the feeling that it just wasn’t going to be Ole Miss’ day. On that first play, Tennessee true freshman quarterback Tyler Bray fired a slant to receiver Justin Hunter. The ball hit Ole Miss linebacker Jonathan Cornell right in the hands, but he could not reel it in. Hunter did, and raced 80 yards for the opening score.

After a 43-21 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette last Saturday, Ole Miss heads to Knoxville and looks to move one step closer to bowl eligibility against Tennessee at 11 a.m. on CBS.

With rivalry games against No. 5 LSU and No. 19 Mississippi State the next two weeks, Saturday’s game takes on added importance for the Rebels (4-5, 1-4 SEC).

“Even with the type of season we’ve had, we can still go to a bowl, so there’s still excitement,” sophomore defensive end D.T. Shackelford said.

1. Alabama (3-0 overall, 0-0 in SEC, 1st last week): He’s back. Last year’s Heisman trophy winner, Mark Ingram, made his triumphant return from a knee injury against Duke and picked up just where he left off. Ingram carried the ball only nine times, but had two runs of around 50 yards. With Ingram and star defensive end Marcel Dareus (suspension) back, the Crimson Tide look poised to capture consecutive national championships.
