Saturday was a big day on the Ole Miss campus. The Rebels played host to the Texas Longhorns under the bright lights of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. However, on Saturday morning the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics was home to an event equally as special for Rebel football fans who remember the good ol’ days of Ole Miss football under head coach Johnny Vaught.

On Oct. 1, 1962, James Meredith became the first black student at The University of Mississippi. Before and after his official enrollment, violent riots and hate shook the campus and took the focus off of what Ole Miss was known for at the time — the most successful football program in school history.

On Monday, Ole Miss announced that head football coach Houston Nutt would not be retained next season, as well as the retirement of Pete Boone by December 2012.

The Rebel nation was also informed that former football great Archie Manning and FedEx Executive Vice President Mike Glenn would co-chair a committee that would be responsible in finding a new Ole Miss football coach and new athletics director.

After a day to take all of this information from Monday, this could be a monumental moment in not just Ole Miss athletics, but for the university as a whole. The two men who are hired to take over such prestigious positions could alter the face of Ole Miss forever.

Growing up, Gunter Brewer listened to stories about his dad.
His father, Billy Brewer, was on the gridiron at Ole Miss, both as a player and a coach. Nearly 20 years after his father was at the helm, another Brewer, Gunter, will roam the sidelines of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the first time this season. He will do so as the Rebels’ new associate head coach, passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Dedication and perseverance are what separate legendary athletes and coaches from the rest.

The streaks are what we remember them by -- Michael Jordan’s three-peat, Mark McGwire’s 70-home-run season and McEnroe’s 42 straight wins in 1984.

Talk about playing for coach Johnny Vaught and coach Billy Kinard.

Coach Vaught was a legend. He’s one of those who you dream of when he might actually know your name. I remember the day he called me by my name. I remember going through two-a-day practices and he said “Pete!” and I couldn’t believe he knew my name and unfortunately he said “You need to move out of the way so we can run this play.” We had great coaches, Bruiser Kinard and the Pooles, Buster and Barney. It was just a good time to be here.

1. Ole Miss 31 Florida 30, 2008: In his first year at Ole Miss, Houston Nutt needed a “signature win” to help the Rebels – downtrodden under former coach Ed Orgeron – gain confidence. No one could have guessed this breakthrough would come against the mighty Florida Gators, especially in Gainesville. But the upstart Rebels got enough big plays from Jevan Snead, Shay Hodge and Dexter McCluster to keep things close.
