AUSTIN MILLER: What are your overall thoughts on the Houston Nutt’s four seasons at Ole Miss?

EDWARD ASCHOFF: I think things started off better than anybody could have ever imagined with back-to-back Cotton Bowl victories. He was the king of town. People loved Houston Nutt, and he was really engaging. He fit in well with the community and was exactly what a team like that needed at the time after the disaster with Ed Orgeron.

During his first two seasons in Oxford, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt did win.

It started with a 31-30 signature win over No. 4 Florida in the Swamp, included back-to-back wins over LSU and finished with the second of back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins. However, after a disappointing 4-8 season, followed by a 2-7 start to this season, Athletics Pete Boone announced that the 2011 football season will be the last for head coach Houston Nutt.

The 2010 Ole Miss football season has been difficult to put into words; when readers ask me why I’ve quit writing about the Rebels this fall I respond: “I ran out of nice things to say.”

Alabama may have dominated the series with Ole Miss 46-9-2, but the Rebels have fared relatively well this past decade, knocking off the Crimson Tide in 2001 (27-24) and 2003 (42-28), while four of the last five meetings have been decided by four points or less, including a 26-23 overtime loss in 2006. However, the Rebels have won only once in 24 chances in Tuscaloosa (1988), where this Saturday night’s game will be played.

Ole Miss has faced Vanderbilt more than any other school except Mississippi State and LSU, and undoubtedly this familiarity has bred contempt between the two teams.
