For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl.

Many thought the 6-foot-1, 254 pound Issac Gross wouldn’t make it in the Southeastern Conference as a defensive tackle, but the Ole Miss freshman is proving those critics wrong.

With two more chances left to find a sixth win and clinch bowl eligibility, Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze took some time in his weekly Monday press conference to talk about just how much it has taken for the Ole Miss program to get to this point at 5-5 with LSU and Mississippi State left to go.

Some perspective is required when thinking about where the 2012 Ole Miss team realistically is in the aftermath of Saturday’s 27-26 loss to Vanderbilt that clinched bowl eligibility for the Commodores and put the Rebels’ bowl hopes on hold for at least another week.

Ole Miss has made significant progress under head coach Hugh Freeze, but there are some things that are beyond a coach’s control.

Depth, for example, is one of them.

The situation Saturday night was all too familiar for Ole Miss. Having the lead with just over two minutes left in the game, a defensive stop would have propelled the Rebels to six wins and bowl eligibility. Instead, they were handed another heartbreaking. This time by the Vanderbilt Commodores, who became bowl eligible themselves with the win.

Over the last two games against Arkansas and Georgia, Ole Miss has found itself unable to move the football on the ground.

The rushing attack was a key factor in the Rebels’ early season offensive success, as the team topped 150 yards rushing in six of their first seven games. However, over the last two weeks, the Rebels have combined for just 123 yards on 66 carries, averaging out to just 1.86 yards per carry.

The Ole Miss offensive line has come a long way since first-year head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff have installed their new offense. In fact, many of the Rebel players have been surprised by the success on offense so far this season.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze readily admits that it’s “very tempting” to shift his offense into overdrive and run a higher percentage of up-tempo plays. However, a lack of depth on both sides of the football makes that tough to do, as the Rebels are down to 64 healthy scholarship players.

“That’s my nature, it is what I would like to do,” Freeze said. “If we were a little deeper in the secondary and at defensive end, it would be even more tempting. It’s still tempting.”

Heading into Saturday’s game where Ole Miss will face one of the better passing attacks in the conference, the Rebels and head coach Hugh Freeze are dealing with some costly injuries in the secondary.

The Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 30-27 on Saturday on the foot of senior Bryson Rose’s 31-yard field goal as time expired. While Rose was carried off the field in triumph, the Rebels’ second-straight Southeastern Conference victory was much more than a one-man job.

The time slot gives Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze and the Rebels another chance to showcase the program to recruits all over the country. It’s also a time slot that means a lot to Freeze.

One of many bright spots this season for the Ole Miss football team is the emergence of freshman huskie Mike Hilton. The Fayetteville, Ga., native came out of Sandy Creek High School as a highly-touted offensive player, but found himself on the other side of the ball at the college level.

Heading into year one in the Hugh Freeze era, there were relatively low expectations for the play on the field, but coming off their bye week, the Ole Miss Rebels (4-3, 1-2 SEC) will make the trip to Little Rock, Ark., to face the Arkansas Razorbacks (3-4, 2-2 SEC), as they look to take another step forward in their quest to become bowl eligible.

A quarterback is looked at to command the offense and establish himself as a leader both in the huddle and in the locker room. Sophomore Bo Wallace has done just that in his first season at Ole Miss. The Pulaski, Tenn., native has been welcomed with open arms to the football team and has taken over as the Rebel’s leader under center.
