We celebrate the 50th anniversary of integration at Ole Miss this year. This anniversary happens to take place four years after the nation watched the man who would become the first black president debate his opponent right here in Oxford. We should all take a moment to appreciate just how far our nation and community have come.
We’ve evolved dramatically in the past several decades but the growth has not come without pains. This university had to endure riots, tens of thousands of National Guard soldiers and the loss of two lives before accepting integration.

“The Houston Police Department places the highest value on human life, and events like these are tragic and unfortunate for everyone involved.”
This is what the chief of the Houston Police Department in Texas said after one of his officers shot and killed a schizophrenic, wheelchair-bound double-amputee on Monday. The man had impressively cornered the offending officer’s partner — who was, just so we’re all on the same page here, not missing any of his limbs — in a way so that the partner couldn’t get away.

Another crop of freshmen have made the journey from their homelands to Oxford. Once again, about half of them are from Houston and Dallas.
As I have split my life between New Orleans, Oxford and Dallas, I think I have a helpful perspective about Texans in Oxford. I’ve heard rumor that Texans can be obnoxious and irritating with our pride about our home state. I have a few tips to help these Texans make a smooth transition between the Once and Future Republic of Texas and Oxford.
Call Texas “The Once and Future Republic of Texas.”

To some, the Delta is known for cotton fields and the origin of the blues, but for those involved in the Sunflower County Freedom Project (SCFP), the Delta is home to kids who need them.

To some, the Delta is known for cotton fields and the origin of the blues, but for those involved in the Sunflower County Freedom Project (SCFP), the Delta is home to kids who need them.
An after school program, the SCFP was founded in 1998 by three Teach for America instructors with the purpose of giving children from middle school to high school extra help in their studies and providing enrichment opportunities that many schools in the Delta cannot offer.

During John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in the 1960s, Kennedy found himself under a great deal of scrutiny because of his Roman Catholic background.  Many Republicans attacked Kennedy by saying that if he became president, he would be too heavily influenced by the papacy.  Many feared that this influence would affect the way he would lead the country and would jeopardize America’s longstanding freedom of religion.

A stroll through the Grove on a Saturday in the fall will prove that: beautiful women in colorful sundresses, gentlemen in sports coats and old men in sweater vests. Other than those types of people, there isn’t much room for outsiders.

This concept saddens and frightens me, but it is how we have done it in Oxford for as long as anyone can remember.

Transition classes are always tough. In Houston Nutt’s first class at Ole Miss, he signed 31 players, many of whom never contributed or qualified.

For new Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, his transition class is a little bit different. The Rebels signed only 13 players on signing day but added four junior college players in December and two greyshirts from last year’s class.

What is not publicized is how much it costs to buy all the Scantrons, how much it costs to put on the affair and to create the new meet and greet.

That money comes from the ASB’s yearly budget and is allotted by its treasurer, John James.
Though James remains the acting treasurer, he is currently working in Houston in an accounting internship.

Saturday’s 31-3 loss in the Egg Bowl to Mississippi State ended the Houston Nutt era in Oxford, but it also was the beginning of a new era that has nowhere to go but up.

Saturday’s 31-3 loss in the Egg Bowl to Mississippi State ended the Houston Nutt era in Oxford, but it also was the beginning of a new era that has nowhere to go but up.

Sophomore quarterback Barry Brunetti made his second start of the season against the Bulldogs and played the whole game for the Rebels. Brunetti completed 12 of 22 passes for 110 yards and ran for another 23 yards on the ground. The transfer from West Virginia was understandably frustrated after the game and is ready to get things going in the right direction with the football program.

1. LSU (12-0, 8-0 SEC, 1st last week): LSU all but locked up a spot in the BCS National Championship with a 41-17 trouncing of Arkansas, the Tigers’ third win over a top-three team this season. In all, LSU has beat seven top-25 teams by an average margin of victory of more than 20 points. Despite trailing 14-0 early in the second quarter, the Tigers outgained the Razorbacks 494-254, including 286-47 on the ground. Sophomore defensive back Tyrann Mathieu was the player of the game, tying the game on an electrifying 92-yard punt return for a touchdown, forcing two fumbles and recovering one of the them. LSU looks to keep its perfect season intact when they play Georgia in Saturday’s SEC Championship.

When the Ole Miss Rebels tangle with the top-ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday, it will not only be the last home game in the Houston Nutt era, but it will also be Senior Night for the team’s 13 seniors.
For two of those seniors, they will be going out playing against their hometown team. Running back Brandon Bolden calls Baton Rouge, La., home and defensive end Kentrell Lockett hails from nearby Hahnville, La.
Both players have seen the ups and downs of the Ole Miss football program in Nutt’s tenure, and both have played instrumental roles in some big wins.

We’ve all received that random phone call. Usually it’s asking us for credit card information or telling us that we’ve won some sort of time share, but in some rare cases, like that of William DeJournett, they present something well worth the time of an unexpected phone call.

Picture this: Student A has a class, required by her major, for which she spends an excessive amount of time working. Hours of homework here. Cram session here, cram session there. After all of the work she put into this class, she finishes with a 93.

That, my friend, is a very good grade. The only problem is that her final letter grade has a little minus sign next to it. That minus sign means the difference between a 4.0 and a 3.7 for the hours involved with that class.

Suddenly, her immense effort is worth a lot less.
