Defensive ends:

Ole Miss recorded only 13 sacks defensively this season, partly due to injuries at the defensive end position. At one spot, senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett returned after tearing his ACL in 2010, but was slow returning to pre-injury form. Lockett finished the season with 33 tackles, but no sacks. At the other spot, senior Wayne Dorsey started the 2011 season playing great football. In the first six games of the season, he recorded 22 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks before breaking his arm against Alabama and missing the rest of the season. True freshman C.J. Johnson shifted down from linebacker to defensive end and played well down the stretch. He recorded nine tackles against Louisiana Tech and 10 tackles against Mississippi State. Junior Gerald Rivers finished with just 13 tackles, but also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Johnson and Rivers, along with sophomores Cameron Whigham and Carlos Thompson, among others give Ole Miss some potential next season at the position.

Defensive line:

The Rebels’ defensive line has been solid so far in 2011 against the pass but has struggled to stop the run. Ole Miss is now faced with the task of replacing senior defensive end Wayne Dorsey, who broke his right arm against Alabama this past weekend. Dorsey was in the middle of an impressive senior season, leading the Rebels in sacks with three and racking up 22 tackles.

Afterwards, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt was impressed by his defense for the second day in a row.

“There is some intensity we are seeing at defense at times,” Nutt said. “Not all of the time, but at times. And I thought the defensive line moved around very well today."

Nutt called out several players on the defensive line and linebacker after practice.

One of the more veteran units on the Ole Miss team in 2010, the 2011 Ole Miss defensive line is much smaller and less experienced than it was a year ago but enjoys a boost in the unit’s athleticism.

After a much-maligned 2010 season in which the defense ranked last in the Southeastern Conference in scoring defense and next to last in total defense, the unit emerged tougher and more aggressive in Saturday’s Grove Bowl and throughout spring practice.
