Burdette committed to Hugh Freeze at Arkansas State and switched to Ole Miss in late January. Originally a running back, he was forced to play quarterback as a senior. He rushed for over 1,200 yards as a junior at the running back position. Listed as an athlete, he could play in the defensive secondary or at running back for the Rebels.

Quarterbacks:

Through six games, Ole Miss has started three different quarterbacks, which is never a good thing. Junior Randall Mackey was in line to open the season as the starter, but was suspended for that game against BYU. He played parts of games against Southern Illinois, Vanderbilt and Georgia before earning the first start of his career against Fresno State, where he played well. He struggled this past week against Alabama, and he has plenty of areas to improve as the Rebels start the second half of the season.

Mackey settling in, looking forward to Alabama

After making his first collegiate start this past Saturday against Fresno State, junior quarterback Randall Mackey is “getting confidence, getting better” after a good week of practice, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt said.

Playing Vanderbilt, a team near the bottom of the SEC every year, seems like it would be a lucky draw, but somehow, the Commodores have had the last laugh in the series.

When senior running backs Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis were ruled out for this past Saturday’s game against Southern Illinois, sophomore running back Jeff Scott knew he was going to get his shot.

He responded with what became his best game as an Ole Miss Rebel, rushing for 118 yards and three touchdowns, while also returning a punt for a touchdown.

Scott racked up over 200 total yards for the second time in his career, the first coming last season against LSU.

1. Slow down the Salukis’ run game.

Last season, Southern Illinois averaged 189.5 yards a game on the ground, and they bested that number in the season opener last week with 240 rushing yards in a 38-10 win over Southeast Missouri State last Saturday.

To throw salt on the Rebel’s wounds for Saturday’s 14-13 loss to BYU, the Rebels lost both of their senior running backs in starter Brandon Bolden and his backup Enrique Davis.

Bolden’s injury looked to be extremely serious and possibly season-ending, but Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt got some good news Monday when he learned that Bolden will likely be out only three to four weeks.

The biggest stories from Saturday were the injuries to senior running backs Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis.

Nutt said Bolden had a small fracture in his ankle and would be in a walking boot for a couple of weeks, but he had no timetable for his return. Nutt was more optimistic on the status of Davis. He said he would not practice this week but he may be available for the game Saturday.

For the second day in a row, head coach Houston Nutt was pleased with his team’s performance on the practice fields.

“We had another good one,” Nutt said of Wednesday’s practice. “We have had two really good back-to-back days. I was excited about them pushing through it today, when it got a little hotter than it has the last two days.”

Nutt said that he is happy to see some of the older players pushing the freshmen.

Each Friday, The Daily Mississippian’s Bennett Hipp will rank the 12 SEC teams by position as part of an eight-week series. Next week: quarterbacks

1. Auburn: The Tigers lose a lot from their 2010 National Championship team, but return a great deal of talent at the running back position. Sophomore Michael Dyer rushed for over 1,000 yards as a freshman and will be paired with the electric Onterio McCalebb. McCalebb is one of the fastest players in the country and ran for almost 900 yards a year ago last year as a sophomore

Each Thursday, The Daily Mississippian’s Bennett Hipp will break down Ole Miss position-by-position as part of an eight-week series. Next week: quarterbacks

As Ole Miss breaks in a new quarterback and a few freshman receivers, the Rebels will most likely rely on the running game early and often this season.

On yet another hot day at the Blackburn-McMurray sports complex, Ole Miss Intramurals held its second intramural tournament of the summer.

Twenty-three students and faculty members, combining to make 12 teams, came out and participated in the Ole Miss Intramural Disc Golf Scramble.

But during the Rebels’ second scrimmage of the spring, it was a different pair of backs who shined. With Bolden out and with an ankle sprain and Scott out with a sprained shoulder, seniors Enrique Davis and Devin Thomas carried the load and with stellar results.

Davis ran five times for 81 yards and scored touchdowns from 53 and 20 yards out. Meanwhile, Thomas had 84 yards on nine carries.

Led by a powerful running game and an inspired second-half performance from a much-maligned defense, Ole Miss snapped a three-game losing streak with a 43-21 victory over Louisiana on Saturday night.

Many assumed Ole Miss would struggle Saturday against Southeastern Conference opponent Kentucky because key players -- defensive end Kentrell Lockett (out for the season), running back Enrique Davis, safety Johnny Brown, and wide receiver Lionel Breaux -- were as a result of injuries.

1. The Rebels must quit beating themselves: After the Vanderbilt game, it was painfully clear to players and fans alike that Ole Miss had plenty of chances to win the ball game. What hurt the Rebels the most were three dropped touchdown passes by Ferbia Allen, Brandon Bolden and Lionel Breaux, respectively. A late fumble by Korvic Neat and two interceptions by Jeremiah Masoli also hurt the Rebels’ chances. Ole Miss cannot afford to make these mistakes against a very good Fresno State team if they expect to pull out a win.

Going into the season, all the focus was on who wasn’t in the Rebels backfield, not on who was. Fact is, Dexter McCluster is not coming back, but by no means is the Rebel backfield bare.
