The University of Mississippi and Oxford communities had the opportunity to hear U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder speak last night at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
Holder, who spoke for the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College fall convocation, discussed the progress integration has made and the journey still ahead. Chancellor Dan Jones also spoke, highlighting the state’s past and the university’s approach to 50 years of integration.
“This is a remarkable time for our university,” Jones said.

Last month, Andy Paul, a religious studies major and recent Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College graduate, was named a Portz Scholar by the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Last month, Andy Paul, a religious studies major and recent Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College graduate, was named a Portz Scholar by the National Collegiate Honors Council. Paul composed his winning work, a collection of short stories, as his senior thesis for the honors college. He became the fourth Portz Scholar produced by the honors college since 2002. Each spring, one honors thesis is selected and sent to the NCHC as a contender for the Portz. Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez, dean of the honors college, said the honors college has to choose one thesis from the 100 or more submitted.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honors organization that recognizes high-achieving individuals, awards students around the nation with more than half a million dollars in scholarships annually.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honors organization that recognizes high-achieving individuals, awards students around the nation with more than half a million dollars in scholarships annually.

The top 20 percent of freshmen and sophomores at The University of Mississippi receive invitations, and they can choose to accept or decline.

Members participate in numerous volunteer projects. The local organization volunteers with Oxford’s Leap Frog program, which helps elementary students at risk of falling behind in classes.

“The brightest stars have always been our students,” said University of Mississippi Chancellor Dan Jones.

Two honors students, Cara Thorne and Ena Wei, were presented with $5,000 awards to complete projects that combine personal meaning and global impact.

Born in Memphis on Dec. 23, 1967, Howorth was the daughter of Jim Barksdale, businessman and benefactor of several University of Mississippi programs, and the late Sally McDonnell Barksdale.

The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College continues to reach new heights, as this past month’s issue of Reader’s Digest placed the University of Mississippi’s honors program on the level of the academically elite Ivy League schools.

The freshman class of 2015 continues to make history, as it brings in the best ACT scores the University of Mississippi has ever seen, along with increased enrollment numbers.

Freshman ACT scores rose from 23.2 in 2010 to 23.5 this year.

As a collective class, the graduating class of 2011 high school seniors stand a better chance of graduating from college, based solely on ACT reports. At the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, enrollment has increased from 900 students to 920 students.

Two honors college students will have the opportunity to have new experiences after winning an exclusive award.

Billy Jean Forrest is interested in exploring health care in Mississippi because she never had it, and Martina Cotelo wants to explore her German-Jewish ancestry because her grandmother sought asylum in a foreign land.

Cotelo, of Oxford, and Forrest, of Randolph, are winners of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College’s 2011 Barksdale Award, which granted each of them $5,000 to fund their studies.
