Saturday’s win over UTEP was a big milestone for a program trying to get out of the bottom of the Southeastern Conference.

The Rebels’ 28-10 win over the visiting Miners of Conference-USA not only gave Ole Miss their same win total from 2011’s disappointing 2-10 season, but it was the first time Ole Miss opened the season 2-0 since defeating Memphis and Southeastern Louisiana in 2009. It was also the first time the Rebels won back-to-back games since wins over Fresno State and Kentucky in 2010.

It was a feeling that had not been felt in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in nearly a year.

The Ole Miss football team rebounded from a lackluster second quarter and scored 35 unanswered points in the second half for a 49-27 win against Central Arkansas to begin the season 1-0 for the first time since 2009. The Rebels rushed to the student section to share in the moment, the program’s first home win since last season’s 42-24 win against Southern Illinois in the second week of the season.

Ole Miss played, perhaps, its best game of the season and held a 17-0 lead halfway through the second quarter but could not overcome an Arkansas second half comeback as the Rebels fell to the Razorbacks 29-24 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Ole Miss has now lost 10 straight SEC games, dating back to last season’s 42-35 win over Kentucky.

“I’m really proud of our guys’ effort today,” head coach Houston Nutt said. “I thought we played extremely hard. I wish we had the third quarter back.”

After four games of the Ole Miss 2011 football season, a lack of offense has become a recurring theme.
On Saturday, Ole Miss managed only 183 total yards of offense and a measly eight first downs against Georgia in a 27-13 loss. The Rebels scored only one offensive touchdown, a 38-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Randall Mackey to freshman wide receiver Donte Moncrief on a trick play.

“Looked really bad,” Nutt said. “It’s a little bit of everything. I never felt that way on the sideline. Just didn’t feel right.

Nutt told those gathered that everyone except defensive back Denzel Nkemdiche and defensive end Kameron Wood reported to camp.

Nutt said he expects Nkemdiche to report soon.

“It’s just some little school stuff," Nutt said. "We thought he was cleared. He went to summer school all summer (at Ole Miss), so I feel real good about it.”
