“They’re really good on defense," Werner. "You look at some of their scores; they’ve only given up a couple touchdowns all year long, so they’re really fast and really physical. It’s going to be a real good test for us.”

In the case of Ole Miss sophomore defensive end C.J. Johnson, much of his offseason and fall camp was spent making sure he was eating enough in order to gain weight.

After shifting from linebacker to defensive end during his freshman season, Johnson found himself undersized for the position, especially compared to other Southeastern Conference defensive ends.

After arguably the offense’s best practice of the spring this past Thursday, the defense ruled the day as the offense took a step back in Tuesday’s practice. Head coach Hugh Freeze went on to say the defense’s emotion and energy matched that of the offense from last week, which he said is to be expected, but he was disappointed the offense didn’t compete harder than it did Tuesday.

As expected, the players took the news pretty tough, but once they got back to the practice fields, all they were thinking about was playing football.

“There is some intensity we are seeing at defense at times,” Nutt said. “Not all of the time, but at times. And I thought the defensive line moved around very well today."

Linebacker C.J. Johnson is set to arrive at Ole Miss on May 30, and that date couldn’t come any sooner for Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt and his staff.

The Rebel defense took a serious hit on April 11 when star linebacker and team leader D.T. Shackelford suffered a torn ACL during spring drills.

With Shackelford likely out for the fall, Johnson – the most coveted player in Mississippi for the class of 2012 – is expected to help fill Shackelford’s void.
