According to an Oxford Eagle article, Diana Wells, a parent of a Lafayette Elementary School kindergartener, claimed to see a bus driver talking on her cell phone while children were on the bus. The consequences of bus drivers using their cell phones while driving children are discretionary and situational, according to Oxford Police Chief Mike Martin.

The Board of Aldermen passed a motion Tuesday night allowing the City of Oxford to purchase two 2000 Gillig 40 foot low floor buses for $18,000 each.

The University of Mississippi will reimburse the Oxford University Transit for the buses.

Oxford City Planner Tim Akers presented the proposal before Mayor Pat Patterson and the Board of Aldermen.

“This is the next step in the sustainability service that we had talked about,” Akers said.

This has some people wondering how safe primary- and college-aged students are on buses in Oxford.
In 2009, there were four school bus crashes in Lafayette County, one in 2010 and none in 2011, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol. Oxford University Transit (OUT) superintendent Ron Biggs said that since starting the service, there have only been minor accidents.

Hotty Toddy Taxi found itself face to face with the Oxford Police Department again Saturday morning when one of its buses ran over three University of Mississippi students. 

The incident happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. at the Oxford Mall near the Malco movie theater, according to OPD Chief Mike Martin. Officers responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a bus.
